What’s Happening With 4A Games? Reburn Situation Explained

4A Games Ukraine has recently changed its name to ‘Reburn’ and introduced a new identity, along with a brand-new intellectual property called La Quimera. This development left gamers worldwide puzzled because it seemed like the studio that created the Metro series had undergone a significant transformation.

As a dedicated gamer, let me clarify some misconceptions. I’m not here to seize control or transform the identity of 4A Games, the brilliant minds behind the Metro series. Rest assured, the development of the upcoming Metro game is very much ongoing. This news doesn’t signal any changes in that regard.

Is The Next Metro Game Still Coming?

Here’s the situation.

In the year 2006, a game development company named 4A Games Ukraine was established, and they began creating a game titled Metro 2033, inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel of the same name. The team assembled their own game engine, called the 4A engine, and in 2007, they collaborated with THQ to acquire extra funding. As a result, THQ obtained the intellectual property rights for Metro.

2010 saw the initial development of Metro Last Light, but in 2012, THQ faced bankruptcy, causing uncertainty over the ownership of the Metro franchise. Not long after, the rights were picked up by Koch Media, who were known at the time as Deep Silver.

Here’s where things start to change dramatically.

In 2014, some members of the 4A Games team decided to relocate from Ukraine due to political unrest, establishing a new studio in Malta, which they aptly named 4A Malta. It was mutually agreed that both 4A Malta and 4A Ukraine could utilize the technology that had been developed and refined by the original studio over time.

Afterward, they began developing Metro Exodus, the latest significant game within the series, which was a collaborative effort between them.

2019 marked a point where both studios became self-reliant, and in 2020, 4A Games (Malta) got purchased by Embracer Group. Meanwhile, unrelated to this event, 4A Games Ukraine successfully obtained funding for their project La Quimera, which the team has finally decided to reveal following nearly five years of development.

2025 saw a significant change for 4A Games Ukraine as they unveiled their new brand identity, adopting the name “Reburn” and effectively parting ways with the “4A Games” moniker permanently.

Moving ahead, both 4A Games and Reburn are free to utilize the 4A Engine. However, it’s important to note that they operate independently and work on distinct projects without any overlap.

This implies that the upcoming Metro game is indeed on its way, but alongside it, we’re also looking forward to playing La Quimera, a first-person shooter with a science fiction theme, developed by Reburn.

That’s everything you need to know!
