Halo Infinite is Embracing Tac Shooters with Search & Destroy Mode Coming This Year

Today, the developers behind Halo revealed that they’re introducing a brand-new competitive mode called S&D Extraction in 2025. This mode is inspired by tactical shooters and Call of Duty’s Search & Destroy, and it’s set to become an integral part of Halo Infinite‘s esports community. To celebrate the arrival of this new mode, a $20,000 map design competition will be organized as well.

What is Halo Infinite S&D Extraction?

In the style of tactical shooters like Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT, or Call of Duty’s Search & Destroy, Halo Infinite presents its own version called S&D Extraction. The full name of this mode in Halo Infinite, Seek and Deploy, is a nod to the bomb plant/defusal mode that Call of Duty is renowned for.

In a game called S&D Extraction, four-person teams alternate between offense and defense. The offensive side aims to perform an “extraction” by placing a bomb at one of two locations, while the defensive team tries to prevent this either by eliminating all offensive players or disarming the bomb. An entire match of S&D Extraction is made up of 11 rounds, with the first team to win six rounds declared the victor.

In games similar to CS2 and VALORANT, players need to manage their economy during and between rounds in S&D Extraction. They accumulate credits by planting or defusing the bomb and getting kills, but can also gain additional credits from strategic devices scattered across the map. During the intervals between rounds, players can spend their earnings on weapons, grenades, equipment, and advanced items like Active Camo, Drop Wall, or Threat Sensor.

In the game S&D Extraction within Halo Infinite, there’s an innovative feature known as a “re-spawn purchase” mechanism, which is not typically found in tactical shooters. If players die during a round and have accumulated enough in-game currency, they can rejoin the round by purchasing their respawn, appearing back at the spawn point with a basic set of gear. Although the specific costs haven’t been revealed yet, the developers at Halo Studios have confirmed that re-spawning will be costly, and players may need to save up credits for multiple rounds to afford it.

At the beginning of this article, it’s highlighted that a $20,000 S&D Extraction map competition is being organized by Halo Studios and ForgeHub. Notably, Halo Studios has employed map creators from the Forge community, Artifice and Mikrips, to develop the game mode and its unique map. The debut of this new mode will take place during the FaZe Kaysan Invitational on March 29, which will stream live on the official Halo Twitch channel.
