The Arkhamverse‘s Batman isn’t a character who has consistently chosen what’s best for his own welfare, and this is especially true when it comes to the people he associates with. It can be frustrating to see Bruce Wayne repeatedly undercut Tim Drake’s Robin, for example. Yet, Batman’s vulnerabilities make him endearing, as they offer a glimpse into his deepest fears in a subtle and intricate manner. However, in “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”, we can see that Bruce has changed significantly and evolved into a very different person.
In contrast to the stoic and blunt Batman portrayed in the Arkham series, the game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League presents a more emotionally matured version of Batman who openly expresses his affection for his Bat-family members. It’s intriguing that Bruce Wayne reappeared as Batman, considering that it seems he was brought back for an antagonistic role in Suicide Squad. While it’s true that Bruce wasn’t confirmed dead at the end of Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady studios made a strong effort to permanently retire his Batman persona. It appears that as long as Warner Bros. is involved, there will always be a Bat-Signal shining over Gotham City.
Batman: Arkham Knight is as Good of a Swan Song as the Arkhamverse May Ever Get
If it’s true that Bruce Wayne intended to retire as Batman after the Knightfall Protocol ending in Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady certainly delivered an exceptional conclusion to their blockbuster trilogy, leaving nothing untouched.
The conclusion feels surprisingly abrupt unless you consider the numerous hints and references it makes to Bruce Wayne’s retirement – such as emotional farewells to Dick Grayson (Nightwing) and Selina Kyle (Catwoman), or his contemplation of passing the role to Michael Lane’s Azrael, a character he knows very little about. However, while Bruce might have stayed connected with Alfred Pennyworth, Barbara Gordon, and Tim Drake, he doesn’t provide them with the same poignant goodbye.
This emphasizes that Bruce consistently mistreats Tim in the Arkhamverse, even abandoning him after being wounded by a gunshot in Arkham Asylum without showing any concern or compassion. Despite the fact that a Justice League consisting of Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and others from Aquaman to Green Arrow would have been adequate, it seems that Bruce was only revived as Batman for the sake of exploiting nostalgia in the Arkhamverse, considering its storyline has been disclosed to be an effort to create shock value through the death of his clone at the hands of Harley Quinn while the original Batman remained alive and unharmed.
Why Batman Prequels May Be the Arkhamverse’s Best Course of Action
Maintaining Batman’s presence in stories guarantees that he can be utilized and his fame capitalized upon. Interestingly, Camouflaj demonstrated its ability to create a daring and genuine Arkham narrative tailored for the Meta Quest 3 gameplay. The significance of WB Games Montreal’s Batman: Arkham Origins as a prequel is undeniable, as it paves the way for more games set in that era. If we’re fortunate, we might see further titles similar to Origins or Shadow, while we hope Rocksteady can craft an exceptional story within the current series timeline.
A greater number of prequels could provide an organic opportunity to depict Batman at the height of his crime-fighting years. Meanwhile, a prospective Arkhamverse game (rumored to be based on Batman Beyond) might determine if its Batman is due for retirement after more than a decade and a half of exceptional Arkham series performances.
