Monster Hunter Wilds: How To Beat Guardian Rathalos (Weaknesses and Rewards)

This tutorial will walk you through defeating the Guardian Rathalos in Monster Hunter Worlds, covering its vulnerabilities and prizes.

In the exciting world of Monster Hunter Wilds, a fresh type of monster known as Guardians is introduced. These monsters are not your average creatures; they’re genetically engineered replicas of pre-existing ones. The Guardian Rathalos, for instance, is one such artificial creature, designed by an ancient civilization to emulate the original Rathalos.

If you found Rathalos challenging on its own, you might require extra assistance when facing the upgraded Guardian Rathalos. Both creatures share the characteristic of being Flying Wyverns, and their combat styles and primary attack methods remain quite comparable.

Instead of merely copying Rathalos, the Guardian Rathalos introduces its unique style and maneuvers during combat. These fresh moves might take you by surprise since Guardian Rathalos is among the initial Guardian bosses you encounter in the game. If you’re finding it tough to defeat this foe, don’t worry – we’re here to assist! In this guide, we will walk you through strategies for defeating Guardian Rathalos in Monster Hunter World.

Guardian Rathalos Overview

In my excitement as a fan, let me share a fascinating tidbit: the creature known as the Guardian Rathalos isn’t just any ordinary monster; it’s an ingenious creation of an ancient civilization, crafted to emulate the legendary Rathalos. This artificial Flying Wyvern carries the mighty powers of Rathalos but is further enriched with unique guardian characteristics.

In Chapter 3’s Faithful Keepers mission, you’ll encounter the challenging boss, Guardian Rathalos. Despite its formidable strength, it has vulnerabilities that can be exploited. Notably, Guardian Rathalos is weak against Dragon and Electric-type elemental attacks. Additionally, it’s susceptible to various status ailments.

In Monster Hunter Worlds, the Guardian Rathalos is encountered during the main storyline in Chapter 3. As you advance through the events of Chapter 3, you’ll eventually reach the Faithful Keepers mission. Following your battle with the Guardian Doshaguma, a brief scene unfolds, and then, dramatically, the Guardian Rathalos swoops down from the sky, initiating the boss fight.

Guardian Rathalos Weaknesses

The Guardian Rathalos utilizes a similar move set as regular Rathalos, but it employs crystals following its assaults for additional attack power. These crystals act as explosives that can be quickly detonated using slingshots to inflict damage. Notably, the Guardian Rathalos is vulnerable to both Dragon and Thunder-based elemental attacks. To cause substantial harm, aim for the legs or mouth, smaller targets that require careful timing and precision to hit effectively.

As a passionate hunter, I’d recommend focusing on either Sever or Blot damage when aiming for the monster’s head – this tactic has proven effective. If the beast is elusive, shift your focus to its legs, employing Sever or Shot damage. Consistently target these two areas, and you’ll bring down the Guardian Rathalos swiftly.

Guardian Rathalos Weak Points

Previously noted, Guardian Rathalos possesses similar vulnerable areas as regular Rathalos – aim for its head and legs. The head can be hit effectively by any type of Sever, Shot, or Blunt attack. On the other hand, the legs respond well to Sever or Shot damage. To make it easier to defeat, alternate these attacks with either Dragon or Thunder elemental damage.

How To Beat Guardian Rathalos in MH Wilds

When fighting Guardian Rathalos for the first time, you’ll observe a key distinction: it leaves a trail of crystal shards following its attacks. These crystals are volatile and burst when hit by arc pods. The Guardian Rathalos will offer ample opportunities to capitalize on these crystals, so make sure to trigger them frequently to inflict damage. In simpler terms, whenever you can, explode the crystals to deal damage to the Guardian Rathalos.

Besides the crystals, it’s crucial to watch out for some moves that Guardian Rathalos employs. One of these is a typical fireball attack. When it does this, the monster uses its inherent abilities and shoots fire at you. It gives a signal for this move by having fire in its mouth, so stay alert and ready to dodge.

Just like The Guardian Rathalos, its flying counterpart performs the same attack, which is clearly visible with fire coming from its mouth. Additionally, it has another move where it soars through the air and scorches the surroundings with flames. To avoid this, quickly dash beneath its feet for cover. But be wary, as provoking it could lead to repeated ground-stomping outbursts of anger.

If you let too much space develop between you, the Guardian Rathalos won’t think twice about charging towards you on foot for an attack. Quickly move aside and take advantage of the opportunity it creates. The monster might also close the distance by jumping or stomping on you, then spitting a fireball. Be quick to dodge once you see it jump and target you with its feet, and you’ll have a chance to counterattack.

Hang on to the Wyvern’s back for an extended period, and it might use its powerful tail swipe to dislodge you. It also has another version of this move where it flies up before executing a wide sweep. Keep your distance if the Guardian takes flight.

Tips To Defeat Guardian Rathalos

  • The Guardian Rathalos will give you very little breathing room, so make sure to exploit whatever openings you get. Each attack does have a short window to exploit right after. Furthermore, the crystals can always be shot for some quick explosion damage.
  • Every now and then, the Guardian Rathalos will stand and start charging up, exuding a white aura. Do not let it do so, as this will enhance its attack damage and make the fight harder.
  • Be wary of the flames as they will inflict Fireblight. If inflicted, repeatedly spam the dodge button to extinguish the effect. Alternatively, you can rely on Nulberries to get over the effect. Make sure to be appropriately stocked up on Nulberries before you head out to fight the Guardian Rathalos.
