Twisted Metal Reboot Would Have Been a Third-Person Battle Royale, Images Reveal

Back in February 2024, we shared news about the cancellation of an upcoming Twisted Metal video game. Unfortunately, this decision was made mere months before the launch of the live-action Twisted Metal series. Simultaneously, it was disclosed that a staggering 900 employees would be let go, which is nearly the entire team responsible for creating the game, effectively dismantling the studio.

When Twisted Metal was scrapped, there wasn’t a lot of information disclosed regarding it. It was only confirmed that it had been in progress for quite a while, but that’s where the details ended. Now, thanks to a former developer from Firesprite, the studio working on Twisted Metal, we have a wealth of new insights about this unsuccessful project.

Battle Royale, Of Course

On the personal website of a past User Interface team leader who was employed at Firesprite from 2022 to 2023, some hazy depictions of the game Twisted Metal, accompanied by a brief explanation, were found.

Here’s what the UI programmer, Hugo Silva, wrote about Twisted Metal:

The third-person game titled Project Copper, created by Firesprite (a studio under PlayStation), is centered around an established IP owned by PlayStation. It features both third-person shooting and vehicle combat, with its core gameplay revolving around the goal of eliminating all opponents to emerge as the sole survivor.

I took on the role of Lead UI Programmer for our team, tasked with designing a foundational UI system that would guide our future projects. Once this structure was in place, I shifted my focus to addressing project-specific requirements while overseeing the UI code team. Additionally, I served as a liaison between the UX and UI art teams.

The pictures bear the label ‘CONFIDENTIAL – NOT TO BE DISCLOSED’, yet one can fairly deduce which game is being discussed, given the details at hand.

I must confess, the images unveil something that appears strikingly absent from Fortnite, and it’s hard not to feel underwhelmed by this revelation. The blend of third-person perspective with vehicular combat and ground-level battles isn’t exactly a novel idea, and even if it had been launched on the market, it might not have left a significant impact.
