In relation to The Legend of Zelda, fans have been treated to two exceptional open-world games – Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. However, it’s important to note that the following installment in the series might deviate significantly from these recent titles. At this moment, we can’t predict how the next Legend of Zelda game will appear, but if previous statements from producer Eiji Aonuma are still relevant, then it won’t adhere to the formula established by Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
In a previous interview, Aonuma mentioned that with “Tears of the Kingdom,” they aimed to expand upon the world developed for “Breath of the Wild” and explore the full potential of what could be included in that world. This comment about future installments of “The Legend of Zelda” might disappoint fans of open-world games, but it also opens up possibilities for something fresh. Given that a return to an open-world design seems unlikely, it’s possible that Korok Seeds may not feature in the series again either.
Korok Seeds May Remain Unique to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
Expanding Link’s Inventory
In “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom”, gathering Korok Seeds plays a crucial role in expanding Link’s in-game inventory. These seeds can significantly expand his inventory, but it seems unlikely that this feature would be present in future linear “Legend of Zelda” games. Open-world action-adventure games typically excel by offering upgradeable inventory systems, which encourages players to explore the game world. Gathering Korok Seeds motivates players to engage in exploration, but a non-open-world “Legend of Zelda” game would make such a feature redundant.
If the upcoming chapter in the The Legend of Zelda series follows a straight path, earning Korok Seeds might not feel as fulfilling. In games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, players have to explore and solve puzzles to discover these Korok Seeds, making their acquisition much more gratifying. However, it’s challenging to envision the use of Korok Seeds in a linear Legend of Zelda game, yet there’s potential that the puzzle-centric approach to obtaining these seeds could still be effective.
In the game titled “Tears of the Kingdom“, a total of 1,000 Korok Seeds are hidden for players to discover. Nevertheless, only 421 seeds are required to completely fill Link’s inventory capacity. Initially, Link has nine weapon slots, five bow slots, and four shield slots. Once fully upgraded, he will possess nineteen weapons, fourteen bows, and twenty shields.
Korok Seeds Could Return, Just in a Different Way
As a fan, I’d prefer if the Korok Seeds collection wasn’t about hunting for hidden puzzles throughout the game. Instead, it would be engaging to encounter these challenges along a more structured path. These puzzles could serve multiple purposes such as expanding Link’s inventory or providing him with new weapons and health upgrades. This way, the feature remains exciting while fitting better within a linear narrative context.
The Switch 2 Could Bring Forth a Zelda Announcement Soon
A Switch 2 Nintendo Direct event is scheduled for April 2, 2025.
There’s still some mystery about what exactly April’s Nintendo Direct event will showcase, but many fans are anticipating announcements for new launch titles. If such announcements materialize, there might be a chance that the upcoming Zelda game could make an appearance. At this point, it’s all speculation, but it isn’t out of the question.
Following Aonuma’s statement that Tears of the Kingdom marks the final evolution of the Zelda series, it’ll be fascinating to discover what lies ahead for this cherished franchise. While we can only speculate at this point, there’s a strong possibility that elements from both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be reinvented in innovative ways.
