Summary
- Pikachu and Eevee don’t need Mega Evolutions, since they are prominent mascots of the franchise that already get enough attention as it is.
- Pokemon like Landorus, Dragapult, and Urshifu are powerful enough and don’t require Mega Evolutions.
- Box Art Legendaries are already strong on their own and giving them Mega Evolutions could lead to unfair and unbalanced situations in the games.
In the world of Pokemon, Mega Evolution is hands down one of the most cherished features, enabling numerous well-liked (and some not so much-liked) Pokemon to progress further in evolution and undergo a significant power-up transformation. After being absent from main series games for quite some time, Game Freak will reintroduce Mega Evolution in the upcoming title, Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
As a dedicated Pokémon trainer, I can’t help but ponder over which creatures might receive a Mega Evolution next, sparking plenty of intriguing debates among fans. However, there’s another side to this discussion that catches my curiosity – the ones who probably shouldn’t be granted one. You see, some Pokémon have unique abilities or traits that would be compromised by this mechanic, or they’re already so powerful that a Mega Evolution could tip the balance. Here are a few Pokémon I believe should steer clear of Mega Evolutions for the time being.
1. Pikachu
The Mascot Of The Franchise Already Gets Enough Attention
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always wondered if our beloved electric buddy, Pikachu, might get a Mega Evolution someday. Traditionally, Game Freak saves this feature for fully-evolved Pokémon, but who knows? They could make an exception for Pikachu and give us a Mega Pikachu down the line, even though it’s not exactly necessary.
Being the star mascot of the Pokémon franchise, Pikachu has been basking in the limelight and consequently has been granted numerous transformations, such as the cosplay versions from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, its Gigantamax form from Sword and Shield, and Partner Pikachu from Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu!. Instead of continuously developing new forms for Pikachu, Game Freak might want to consider giving some attention to its evolution, Raichu, by creating a Mega Evolution for it instead.
2. Eevee
Its Eight Evolutions Need It Way More
As a dedicated Pokemon fan, I’ve been eagerly hoping that Game Freak might consider expanding the Mega Evolution possibilities for one of my favorites – Eevee! While it’s not fully evolved yet, it has undeniably grown in popularity alongside Pikachu as a franchise icon. It would be truly exciting if they were to make an exception and introduce a Mega Eevee form.
Just imagine the power that could be unlocked when Eevee harnesses the potential of its eight evolutions, much like its signature Z-Move, Extreme Evoboost! The community is already buzzing with anticipation for this potential reality, making it a dream we all share.
While it might seem appealing to give Eevee a fresh form, I believe it would be far more intriguing and fulfilling if Game Freak focused on creating Mega Evolutions for all eight of its evolutions instead. Much like Pikachu, Eevee is a beloved mascot that retains its charm best when left unevolved as often as possible.
3. Ditto
It Can Already Use Transform, So What’s The Point?
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at Ditto – one of the most iconic examples of unique traits among Pokémon. After all, its claim to fame is its ability to learn Transform, a move that enables it to mimic any other Pokémon standing nearby, and wield their moves and abilities in combat.
Essentially, Ditto was crafted for its shape-shifting capabilities, making it unlikely for Game Freak to modify or enhance this distinctive trait through Mega Evolution. Moreover, Ditto is capable of mimicking any other Pokemon undergoing Mega Evolution during a battle, effectively utilizing the mechanic inherently.
4. Arceus
The “God” Of Pokemon Doesn’t Need A Mega Evolution
In Generation Four, Arceus, known as the Alpha Pokemon, was introduced. This extraordinary creature is said to have created the entire universe and all the other Pokemon that dwell within it. Unsurprisingly, it boasts immense power, with a base stat total of 720, its unique move, Judgement, and its exceptional ability, Multitype, which enables it to transform into any type, contingent on the plate it’s carrying.
Giving Arceus a Mega Evolution would make things overly complicated as it’s already quite potent and can use all other Pokémon types. Adding a temporary evolution could disrupt its existing storyline. Given that Arceus was the main character in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and no new form was given to it in that game, it’s unlikely that we’ll see a Mega Evolution for Arceus in the future.
5. Landorus (And The Other Forces Of Nature)
It Already Has Its Incredible Therian Forme
Skilled Pokemon players recognize that Landorus can be a formidable force in battles. When it transforms into its Therian Forme, it boasts a superior stat distribution. This, combined with its versatile move set, exceptional type compatibility, and remarkable ability, has allowed it to make a significant impact on the competitive Pokemon scene for many years.
Because Landorus’s Therian Forme provides it with a substantial edge in combat (despite not boosting its stats), there’s no need to further enhance it with a Mega Evolution that could potentially make it excessively powerful. This reasoning also applies to the other Forces of Nature – Tornadus, Thundurus, and Enamorus – as they should not receive Mega Evolutions either. However, this doesn’t matter much since they all have their own Therian Formes already.
6. Dragapult
This Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon Is Already Very Strong On Its Own
In discussions about which Pokémon deserve a Mega Evolution, it’s no surprise that pseudo-legendaries like Dragapult, being among the franchise’s most powerful creatures, often come up. While some might wish for Dragonite to finally receive a Mega Evolution, others argue that formidable Pokémon such as Garchomp or Metagross didn’t require one initially.
In essence, Mega Dragapult is exceptionally formidable in combat due to its impressive Speed, Attack, and versatile stats. Moreover, its unique Dragon-Ghost type and the three useful abilities at its disposal, coupled with a wide array of moves, make it a force to be reckoned with. The thought of enhancing Mega Dragapult further could potentially disrupt the balance of the game, as its current design is quite unconventional yet maintains an air of seriousness and sophistication. As such, many believe that Mega Dragapult is already at its best and does not require any modifications.
7. Urshifu
An Overpowered Pokemon That Already Has Two Gigantamax Forms
Urshifu has been causing quite a stir in the competitive Pokemon world due to its two forms – Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style. One of their standout features is the ability called Unseen Fist, which lets them bypass protective moves such as Protect, Detect, King’s Shield, and so on. To make matters worse, they each have distinct Gigantamax Forms that significantly increase their menace, in terms of both size and impact.
Since Dynamax and Gigantamax are no longer part of the games, some supporters worry that Game Freak might try to make up for it by granting Urshifu its own Mega Evolution. However, such a move would be problematic as it would transform an already potent Pokemon into an overpowered monster, creating an unfair advantage. Considering that Gigantamax is temporary, while Mega Evolution persists until the Pokemon faints or the battle ends, it’s best for Urshifu to hold off on getting its Mega Evolution until a future game when its mechanic returns.
8. All The Box Art Legendaries
Game Freak Should Try To Avoid Another Mega Rayquaza Situation
Fan-coined term ‘Box Cover Legendaries’ refers to significant, legendary Pokemon that appear on the covers of Pokemon games, such as Ho-oh, Lugia, Dialga, Palkia, etc. Given their pivotal roles in the mythology of their respective regions, these powerful creatures are already at the peak of their power and typically don’t require additional strength enhancements.
Essentially, Game Freak has already followed a similar approach with the “Box Art” Legendaries in the remakes of Generation Three, specifically Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. They introduced two new Primal Reversions for Groudon and Kyogre (similar to Mega Evolution) and also created Mega Rayquaza, a Pokemon that soon became one of the most powerful in the series. If they were to replicate this with other Legendaries known for their immense power, such as Giratina, Zacian, Zekrom, Reshiram or Miraidon, it could lead to an unreasonable power level within the games and potentially disrupt the competitive Pokemon scene’s Uber tier.
