Legendary Japanese Game Developer Wants to Revive This Cancelled Xbox Game

Hideki Kamiya, the ex-co-founder of PlatinumGames and director behind games like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and Okami, remains hopeful about resurrecting an Xbox-exclusive project that once sparked great anticipation.

At the moment, Kamiya is employed at a freshly established studio named Clovers, launched in 2023, where he’s been tasked with developing a follow-up to the game Okami, which was recently unveiled during last year’s Game Awards ceremony.

However, Kamiya has dreams of working on another title, one of which was sadly canceled in 2017.

A clip shared on the revamped Clovers X (previously Twitter) platform featured a bustling group congregating around Kamiya’s workstation, where he reminisced about the creation of Scalebound. In the video, he expressed his hope to redevelop it in the future, a sentiment mirrored by the preceding post.

Of course, the notion that Scalebound might return sparks enthusiasm among many, although it remains a long shot for reality.

Scalebound Was Supposed to Be An Xbox Exclusive From PlatinumGames

At the E3 2013 event, Scalebound was unveiled during Microsoft’s presentation, and it was developed by PlatinumGames while Microsoft Studios handled its publication.

Although it was ultimately cancelled, we managed to view a substantial amount of video content during the development process, which included gameplay footage.

Kamiaya and his group were determined to produce a game that consistently maintains the high-quality standard synonymous with Platinum’s action titles. Unlike Bayonetta’s combat, this new game will place greater emphasis on achieving photorealistic visuals.

The games that served as examples of inspiration were “Sorcerian” and “Hydlide 3,” both 1987 role-playing games boasting towering mythical creatures, challenging game mechanics, and an abundance of diverse situations and choices.

Regrettably, the game titled “Scalebound” faced obstacles during development that ultimately led to its cancellation in 2017. Now, ownership of the intellectual property (IP) lies with Microsoft, potentially allowing Kamiaya and his team at Clovers to reconsider a revival. However, as of now, Microsoft and their team remain silent on the matter. But who knows? Stranger things have happened. With its emphasis on intense action, colossal monsters, hardcore gameplay, and an abundance of gameplay options, it appears that Scalebound could be well-suited to today’s gaming landscape.
