One intriguing rewording might be: The Chimera Ant saga stands out as one of the most gripping and somber narratives within Hunter x Hunter, taking a seemingly conventional shonen journey and evolving it into an insightful investigation into human nature, self-identity, and dominance.
In this storyline, we encountered some of the scariest and formidable adversaries ever seen within the saga. Unlike previous threats, these entities combined human-like intellect with primal instincts, resulting in a novel species of hunters that surpassed the capabilities of standard creatures.
Here are eight Chimera Ants, each boasting extraordinary skills, who stand as the epitome of strength within their kind. The ones leading the squadrons and the loyal Royal Guards safeguarding their Monarch are included in this elite group.
8. Meleron
The Invisible Hand of Justice
Meleoron may not have the brute physical force comparable to his Chimera Ant counterparts, but due to his unique skill set, he stands out as one of the strategically most significant fighters throughout the series. With his God’s Accomplice (his Nen ability), he has the power to render himself and anyone he touches invisible to detection.
In the course of the Palace Infiltration, Knuckle and Meleoron’s alliance turned out to be fatal for the palace defenders. By leveraging Meleoron’s exceptional stealth skills with Knuckle’s APR ability, they devised a strategy that left the Royal Guards defenseless against it.
As a gamer, I found myself in the shoes of Meleoron, unlike most Chimera Ants who thrived on their predatory instincts. However, my human memories remained intact, fostering a sense of morality within me. This moral compass guided me to defy the Chimera Ant hierarchy and side with the Hunters instead.
7. Colt
A Wing and a Prayer

Colt, distinct among Chimera Ants, wasn’t singled out by his strength, but rather his unwavering loyalty. He harbored the recollections of a boy named Kurt, who sacrificed himself to shield his sister Reina, and this innate urge to protect others stayed deeply embedded within him, even after he was reborn as a Chimera Ant.
In my role as a gamer, let me tell you about Colt, the fearless leader of our squadron. With unmatched flight skills and combat prowess, he was more than just a formidable warrior – he was a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. However, what truly set him apart wasn’t his physical might but his unwavering loyalty.
In the heat of battle, when the Queen was critically wounded after Netero’s team attacked, Colt made a heart-wrenching decision. Desperate to save her life, he reached out to human hunters for help, even offering his own life as a bargain. This selfless act revealed a depth of emotion that was rare among Chimera Ants, demonstrating the power of loyalty and the lengths one would go to protect those they care about deeply.
Following the Queen’s demise, Colt assumed care for the premature King’s twin sister, whom he affectionately named Reina, in memory of his human sister. This compassionate act marked a significant step in Colt’s transformation. Unlike many Chimera Ants, Colt was not driven by the pursuit of power or domination. Instead, he chose to safeguard and foster life, demonstrating that his humanity had always endured, albeit subtly.
6. Cheetu
Speed Kills

Amongst the diverse beings of the Hunter x Hunter realm, few could rival Cheetu’s breathtaking swiftness. As a chimera ant squadron leader modeled after cheetahs, his speed was so astonishing that even seasoned hunters like Morel and Knuckle found it challenging to maintain pace with him.
Through the development of his Nen abilities, his innate physical talents were significantly amplified, forming an exceptionally lethal blend that left him almost invincible during battles. However, it was not Cheetu’s physical strength that proved to be his vulnerability but rather his excessive self-confidence and immature character.
In his skirmish with Morel, Cheetu unveiled a uniquely designed Nen space where adversaries were pinned down in a game-like scenario, highlighting both his inventiveness and his somewhat juvenile, yet spirited, attitude towards combat. However, when this method failed, he swiftly adapted by honing another skill, underscoring his rapid growth as a warrior.
Despite Cheetu’s remarkable abilities, his lack of strategic thinking proved fatal when he encountered Silva Zoldyck. His swift speed couldn’t protect him from a well-orchestrated trap, ultimately leading to his sudden demise. In a painful irony, the hunter found himself hunted by a more seasoned predator.
5. Leol
King of Adaptation

Originally known as Hagya, the lion-human hybrid figure named Leol garnered reverence in his role as Squadron Leader, not only due to his intelligence but also by skillfully maneuvering others towards his favor.
Leol, previously called Hagya, earned respect as Squadron Leader for both his smarts and talent at influencing others for personal gain.
In battle, Leol’s unique talent of borrowing other people’s Nen powers once specific requirements were met, gave him an edge and kept his adversaries guessing, since it was uncertain which pilfered ability he would use next.
In their undersea confrontation with Morel, Leol showcased not only his strategic mind but also his downfall, overconfidence. He thought he had already won by adopting a skill tailor-made for the setting, unaware that Morel had cleverly orchestrated the battlefield selection to neutralize exactly that technique of his.
4. Neferpitou
The Deadly Grace

The arrival of Neferpitou left Hunter x Hunter fans reeling after it swiftly beheaded Kite, one of the series’ top Hunters. This feline-like Royal Guard was feared for its unmatched agility and chilling combat intuition, making it a deadly hunter that even Chairman Netero recognized as a significant danger.
The expanse of their protective barrier might span up to two kilometers, forming an expansive and exact sensory perimeter that would barely allow any intrusion near the palace unnoticed. This defensive power was in sync with their offensive Nen skills such as Doctor Blythe, which enabled them to control bodies like marionettes, and Terpsichore, which amplified their extraordinary physical prowess beyond the norm.
Neferpitou was intimidating due to their innocent curiosity that bordered on the adult realm and absolute disregard for morals. They genuinely wanted to learn about their victims, transforming Kite’s body into a training tool, not out of malice, but from an intrigued, scientific perspective.
3. Shaiapouf
The Puppet Master

Shaiapouf skillfully blended mental prowess and physical power. Being the most intellectually advanced among the Royal Guards, this being with butterfly-human traits didn’t only guard the King physically, but also vigilantly protected what he perceived as the King’s mission.
His talents mirrored a deceitful disposition. Shaiapouf possessed the power to shed scales, enabling him to perceive others’ feelings deeply, providing him with unparalleled comprehension of his adversaries’ mental conditions. With his Beelzebub ability, he could split his body into minuscule fragments, making it extremely challenging to eliminate and granting him the unique ability to penetrate, spy on, and assault from various angles simultaneously.
In the course of the Palace Takeover, Shaiapouf’s struggle was deeply ideological. He was more concerned about Komugi affecting the King than any attack from Hunters, viewing the human girl as a danger to Meruem’s intended role as an ideal ruler. This apprehension drove him to take his most desperate measures, as he schemed to eliminate her while still upholding the appearance of unwavering devotion.
Shaiapouf posed danger due to his unshakable belief. Regardless of imminent loss, his devotion towards his perception of the King’s grandeur remained steadfast, prompting him to battle until his physical form crumbled from the poison that ultimately took down all the Royal Guards.
2. Menthuthuyoupi
The Monster Who Found Mercy

In contrast to his fellow guards who were genetically human, Menthuthuyoupi was uniquely crafted from magical beasts, making him an extraordinary figure of immense physical might and devastating potential.
In a state of readiness, Youpi’s unique talent for shape-shifting turned every confrontation into a daunting challenge. When threatened, he could grow extra arms, wings, and eyes, or even expand to monstrous proportions. The pinnacle of his transformative powers was the Rage Blast, which channeled his fury into devastating energy bursts capable of razing vast areas within the palace.
showcasing an incredible ability to withstand damage, Youpi endured multiple assaults that would have been fatal for any other character, even taking direct blows from Killua’s Godspeed. It was only the lethal radioactive toxin that eventually claimed Meruem’s life that could finally bring this relentless force of destruction down.
1. Meruem
The Ultimate Life Form.

In a brutal and ominous display of his immense power, Meruem emerged from his mother’s womb, taking her life during the birth. This violent debut served as a chilling portent for the unrivaled might of the Chimera Ant King. His physical prowess surpassed anything previously witnessed in the series, encompassing superhuman strength, speed, and resilience that made even the esteemed Royal Guards appear comparatively feeble.
In a remarkable way, Meruem’s extraordinary intellectual growth set him apart from everyone else. Within mere days of being born, he mastered intricate games such as chess and Go, outperforming global champions with his exceptional memory and analytical skills. This not only made him physically superior but also mentally incomparable.
In this confrontation with Chairman Netero, we got a clear glimpse of Meruem’s immense power. Even though Chairman Netero deployed his Buddha technique, delivering countless powerful strikes, Meruem endured mostly unscathed before ultimately dismembering the Chairman. It wasn’t until Netero made the ultimate sacrifice, triggering the Poor Man’s Rose bomb within him, that he managed to inflict serious damage on the King.
As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it this way: In my journey with Komugi, a sightless human girl who consistently outsmarted me at Gungi, Meruem, the once ruthless king, uncovered something far more precious than power. On his deathbed, poisoned and near the end, he found tranquility as he cradled Komugi in his arms – a testament to his realization that bonds and affection surpassed even his flawless design.
