- Possessing various abilities such as flight, immortality, and Ultra Instinct, Grand Priest enforces the laws of the Angels.
In Dragon Ball Super, we meet the Grand Priest, also known as the Grand Minister in the English dub. This character has a unique appearance similar to Universe 7’s Angel Whis. For thousands of years, he serves in an advisory position to Zeno. As powerful and wise as he is, the Grand Priest commands respect not just from mortals but even the Gods of Destruction themselves.
Unlike the Kais from Dragon Ball folklore, the Grand Priest isn’t typically involved in battles or serving as a mentor for those seeking to grow stronger. Instead, he stands by Zeno, fulfilling his role as an advisor. However, there is more to this powerful character within the story.
Who is Grand Priest?
Possibly the Most Overpowered Character

In the 55th episode of “Dragon Ball Super,” titled “I’d Like to See Goku, You Say a Summon From Grand Zeno!, ” the Grand Priest makes his appearance. Functioning as a trusted counselor to Zeno, the Over-King and sovereign of all universes, the Grand Priest is no figure to underestimate. Although he appears small in stature, he possesses a power unparalleled to anything ever encountered before him, a power that may never be duplicated again.
In the world of anime, Grand Priest is famed for being one of the five strongest warriors across all universes, and even more so in the manga as the absolute strongest. He’s incredibly skilled in combat and boasts a sharp intellect. Interestingly, he’s the father of all thirteen angels, including Whis. Despite his composed and courteous nature towards others, it’s advisable to treat him with caution, as his sons Whis and Shin warn Goku during their initial encounter with him.
Under his unassuming exterior, the Grand Priest is renowned for being one of the top five fighters across all the known universes.
Stronger Than Angels and Gods
Just Who Can Defeat Grand Priest?
When Goku was called to meet Zeno, he noted the overwhelming aura emanating from Grand Priest and expressed his surprise at his power. Overcome by curiosity, Goku expressed a desire to fight Grand Priest someday to Whis. However, Whis revealed that Grand Priest is one of the top five powerful beings in any universe, even surpassing Angels and Gods of Destruction.
In the manga, I bear witness to an intriguing spectacle where Grand Priest engages in combat with two Gods of Destruction. To my astonishment, he deflects their powerful attacks with nothing more than a single finger. Although his role is primarily observational and ensuring the natural course of events, it’s not hard to imagine that if he chose to, he could annihilate anything perceived as a threat, given his formidable abilities.
Abilities of Grand Priest

In the anime, Grand Priest’s power might not always be highlighted as it is in the manga, but make no mistake – he possesses an immense amount of power and skills that would instill fear even in the strongest fighters. Not a single Angel, God of Destruction, or mortal who knows of his existence would dare to confront him in battle, for they would vanish from their timeline swiftly within mere moments. Some of his abilities include:
- Flight – As with most characters in Dragon Ball, Grand Priest is capable of flight.
- Immortality – Grand Priest is imortal and cannot be killed, but is not prone to erasure, should he break the “Law of the Angels”.
- Ultra Instinct – As an Angel, the Grand Minister remains in the Perfected Ultra Instinct state at all times. Due to this, Grand Priest is able to detect and dodge any threat without the need to be aware of it, and has an advanced mastery over the form compared to the other Angels and Goku.
- Portal Opening – In order to move between universes, Grand Priest is able to open and close portals, and move them to his desired destination.
- Magic Materialization – With a high degree of magic in his ability, Grand Priest can materialize anything he can think of. This includes several objects in the Power of Tournament. He is also capable of increasing or reducing the size of any object.
- Divination – Using a crystal ball, Grand Priest can see into any timeline, and witness an event happening at any time.
- Kai Kai – With the help of his Angels, Grand Priest can teleport the Angel and any being within contact of them to his location.
- Energy Shield – Grand Priest can create a powerful shield made from energy in order to protect him and anyone else he chooses.
- Eradicate – As seen with any Angel that breaks the “Law of the Angels”, Grand Priest can erase anything from existence.
- Resurrection – Grand Priest also has the power to revive anyone from death, including those that have been eradicated from existence.
- Trait Removal – In order to keep the peace and make sure no being becomes too powerful for their own good, Grand Priest can remove any trait from any being, including the power of a God of Destruction.
- Warp – Similar to Whis’ ability to move himself and Beerus to a desired location, Grand Priest can also warp, though he does so at much higher speeds compared to his fellow Angels.
Grand Priest’s Role in Super

The Main Duties of the Grand Priest involve standing by Zeno and passing on instructions from him to whomever Zeno desires to communicate with. He demonstrates both wisdom and strength in his frequent discussions with Zeno, often offering advice that carries significant weight with the Omni-King. Despite his intimidating appearance, the Grand Priest is not evil at heart.
As the mastermind behind the thirteen celestial beings, the Grand Priest is responsible not only for bringing them into existence but also for monitoring and counseling them as they carry out their duties in their respective realms. These divine entities are bound by a rule that prohibits them from meddling in the affairs of the universes they govern, meaning they can’t engage in combat or take sides, and must maintain impartiality at all times. Furthermore, their extraordinary power is off-limits when it comes to resolving conflicts, even if the outcome means saving their Gods of Destruction or ordinary beings, due to the sacred “laws of the Angels”.
