Back in January, we shared news about a fierce competition among four film studios vying for the rights to continue the successful Resident Evil movie series, due to its financial prospects.

The latest news indicates that the film rights will remain with Sony Pictures, and they’ve also scheduled a launch date for the upcoming movie remake.

Resident Evil Movie Reboot Director Fan Of Series “For Decades”

According to a recent article from entertainment news source Deadline, the Resident Evil film series will remain under Sony’s control. Previously, Warner Bros. had expressed interest in acquiring it, but Sony successfully deterred their approach.

Title unknown, the upcoming Resident Evil reboot (not linked to Paul W.S. Anderson’s film series) is set for release on September 18, 2026. Given that no actors have been announced yet, it seems the planned release date might be rushing things. This suggests Sony may be eager to get this movie in cinemas as quickly as possible.

Absolutely, since the film’s premiere is still some time away, you might notice the release date shifting. This happens quite often with video game launches as well.

One factor driving Sony’s eagerness to release the upcoming film is that it’s being helmed by Zach Cregger, who directed the well-received movie, Barbarian. Apart from Cregger, Shay Hatten (known for Ballerina, John Wick Chapter 3 and Chapter 4) will be collaborating on the script. As of now, no specifics about the film have been disclosed, but it’s expected to remain true to the horror franchise’s original essence.

Apart from being a director planning a franchise reboot, Cregger is equally passionate about the games themselves. In fact, he’s been an enthusiastic fan for many years, and he considers it a significant privilege to have the opportunity to breathe life into this fantastic series, as expressed by his words: “Being a long-time devotee of these games, I can’t express enough how thrilling it is for me to be part of bringing this outstanding title back to life.

Beyond just being involved with Sony Pictures, I’m thrilled to share that Constantin Film is joining forces for both production and financing of this exciting project. Notably, PlayStation Productions will also play a key role in the team of producers, making it a collaborative effort that I can hardly wait to see unfold!

All the Resident Evil movies so far have been distributed by Sony Pictures, which encompasses the film series directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and the latest release, Resident Evil: Raccoon City (2021). To date, this movie franchise has raked in a staggering $1.2 billion globally, placing it among the most financially successful video game-based film franchises ever.

Here’s hoping that Cregger remains true to the games this time around, producing a movie that lives up to the Resident Evil brand.

Regarding the games, Capcom revealed Resident Evil 9 back in July of last year; however, they’ve been silent about the project ever since.
