The most recent “Pirates of the Caribbean” film was released in 2017, and it didn’t exactly spark global enthusiasm. However, die-hard fans shouldn’t wait too long for another Pirates movie if one high-ranking Disney official gets his wish.
Back in 2003, it’s amazing how easily we might forget the massive impact that the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” film had. Directors Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer took a significant risk by banking on Johnny Depp, an unproven box office star, to headline a $140 million production based on a theme park ride. It seemed almost implausible that Disney would stake everything on a blockbuster from the director of “Mouse Hunt” and “The Ring,” featuring the actor known for “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Chocolat.” Yet, against all odds, it succeeded. “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” unexpectedly became a financial triumph, kickstarting a series of five films. Over two decades later, another “Pirates” movie is finally being made.
At the Disney panel during SXSW on Saturday, where Robert Downey Jr. made a special appearance, Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro and Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman discussed various topics under the Disney brand. For quite some time, there have been whispers about another Pirates film, but when someone of Bergman’s stature confirms it, people listen. The Hollywood Reporter was present at the panel, and this is what Bergman had to say about the upcoming project: “We are indeed making another Pirates movie, so it’s fantastic news.
What Will The New Pirates Of The Caribbean Film Be?
Will The Real Jack Sparrow Please Stand Up?
It appears Bergman has shared news about an upcoming “Pirates” movie. Could this upcoming film be the spinoff starring Margot Robbie, which was first mentioned in 2020? However, updates on that project have been unclear due to mixed reports suggesting it’s both in production and not. It is also possible that Bergman refers to a reboot of the entire franchise since Johnny Depp, who played a key role in the original series, is no longer young. Starting fresh might be an appropriate move for this iconic pirate saga.
It appears Jerry Bruckheimer continues to steer this venture, with rumors suggesting he’s keen on Depp reprising his role as Jack Sparrow. With the legal battle between Depp and Amber Heard being widely publicized, one might wonder if Disney is ready to jump back into business with Johnny Depp. Considering the lead character is a 61-year-old Depp, there’s a question about whether it’s wise to proceed with such a blockbuster franchise. As the pre-production for the next Pirates film is underway, Disney seems to be weighing these considerations internally.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is currently available to stream on Disney+.
