In the world of Dragon Ball, it’s Goku, our leading character, who has undergone the most character transformations and Zenkai boosts compared to any other character. Initially, creator Akira Toriyama aimed to highlight Gohan, but eventually, the narrative returned to Goku, ensuring that even more impressive transformations would unfold in the Dragon Ball saga.
In Dragon Ball Super’s Majin Buu Saga, Goku was the pioneer to achieve Super Saiyan 3 status. However, during his fight against Buu, a form superior to this one was introduced – the Ultra Instinct. This transformation surpassed all previous forms, as it transcends the capabilities of any ordinary being, granting powers akin to those of a deity.
What Is Ultra Instinct?
A Transformation of the Angels

In the realm of Dragon Ball Super, I’ve witnessed a remarkable transformation called Ultra Instinct. This form, as Whis reveals, is one Angels naturally inhabit and sustain continuously. During sparring sessions with Goku and Vegeta, Whis effortlessly employs this state, gracefully evading every attack without so much as a blink, while offering profound advice along the way. Ultra Instinct transcends being merely a power-up that amplifies strength; it endows its users with the unique ability to act instinctively, without the need for thought.
The form… That glow… That… That, indeed, is the complete Ultra Instinct!
To achieve Ultra Instinct, one must let go of conscious thought during combat and act solely on instinct. Given Goku’s habitual lack of overthinking, it becomes more feasible for him to attain this state, particularly as he approaches his limit. Conversely, Vegeta, who tends to overanalyze every situation, struggles to get close to the Ultra Instinct form and harness its power.
When Does Goku Unlock Ultra Instinct?
In episode 110 of “Dragon Ball Super”, titled “Goku Unleashed! The New Ultra Instinct of the Aroused One“, we find ourselves right in the middle of a fierce battle between Goku and Jiren, the strongest warrior from Universe 11. Interestingly, it was mentioned that during their previous encounter, Jiren wasn’t fighting at full strength. In fact, Goku had pushed himself close to his limit while using his x20 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken form. A Spirit Bomb attack was countered and sent back towards Goku, leaving him on the brink of defeat. However, in a surprising turn of events, Goku transformed into a new state right after the blast.
In the blast zone, Goku transformed from his enhanced state back to his regular form, but something was noticeably altered. Jiren swiftly recognized this change as Goku assumed the Ultra Instinct Sign form, which is the basic version of Ultra Instinct. This newfound state allowed Goku to intuitively perceive all oncoming attacks and deftly dodge them with uncanny accuracy.
The event on the battlefield took everyone by surprise, even the celestial beings observing from afar – the Angels and Gods of Destruction. It was widely assumed that Ultra Instinct, in any form, could only be achieved by deities like them. Witnessing a mortal from another galaxy doing so was considered unheard of, almost impossible. However, Goku managed to attain it, and with its power, he was able to force Jiren back – a feat never accomplished before in the Tournament of Power.

When Has Goku Used The Unstoppable Transformation?

In the Dragon Ball Super series, Goku has access to a special form known as Ultra Instinct, which he has employed on multiple occasions. This transformation has proven crucial in various battles depicted within the Dragon Ball Super manga, serving as Goku’s secret weapon. Unlike Vegeta’s Ultra Ego form, first displayed during the Moro Arc, Goku’s Ultra Instinct is a technique he has utilized repeatedly throughout different scenarios.
All told, Goku has employed this particular form across five separate episodes within the anime series Dragon Ball Super, and also in ten different chapters of the Dragon Ball Super manga.
- Dragon Ball Super, Episode 110 — the official debut of Ultra Instinct Sign, used during his fight with Jiren.
- Dragon Ball Super, Episode 115/116 — the second time Goku uses this form, this time in a battle with Kefla.
- Dragon Ball Super, Episode 128 — used in his second fight with Jiren, reminding himself that Universe 7 is relying on him to win.
- Dragon Ball Super, Episode 130 — the introduction to Mastered Ultra Instinct, the powered-up version of Sign.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 55 — achieved once more after training with Merus for six months.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 58 — used Ultra Instinct to defeat Saganbo, one of Moro’s henchmen.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 59 — brought out the full power of Ultra Instinct during his first fight with Moro.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 63 — used Ultra Instinct Sign again, only to get taken down with one blow from Moro.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68 — Goku’s last use of Ultra Instinct Sign in the manga during his battle with Moro
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 64/65 — Goku brings out Mastered Ultra Instinct to counter Moro’s power, and turn the tables on him for good.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68 — Earlier in the chapter, Goku used Sign. Towards the end, he brings out Mastered Ultra Instinct to demonstrate his handle of it to Whis.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 73 — While fighting Granolah’s clone, Goku brings out Mastered Ultra Instinct to get the upper hand.
- Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 84 — Alongside Vegeta, in his Ultra Ego form, Goku powers up to Mastered Ultra Instinct to take down Gas.
Can Someone Else Achieve Ultra Instinct?
Absolutely! Several characters possess the capability to attain the Ultra Instinct state, and there are others who have already managed it. Characters like Whis, along with Angels from every universe, maintain a constant Ultra Instinct mode, making them adept at dodging any attack without much exertion. Gods of Destruction might not be naturally equipped to access the Ultra Instinct state, but they train with their assigned Angel in order to achieve this level someday.
There are other forms that, though not yet achieved the rank of the Ultra Instinct transformation, possess almost equivalent power levels. For instance, Vegeta’s Ultra Ego form allows him to absorb any attacks he’s been struck with and convert them into raw energy. This stands in sharp contrast to the Ultra Instinct skillset, which empowers its user to effortlessly dodge all incoming attacks without even a second thought.
