Brian Geraghty, portraying Zane Davis, the faithful foreman to Harrison Ford’s character Jacob Dutton in the Paramount+ series “1923,” a spinoff of “Yellowstone,” has shared insights about collaborating with the esteemed actor. The Paramount+ production delves into the lives of the Dutton family during 1923, a tumultuous time that included Prohibition, a devastating drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression. Montana experienced these hardships years prior to the 1929 Wall Street Crash as depicted in this series.
In the second season of the Yellowstone prequel, the Dutton clan is thrust into a harsh winter, battling both personal and external adversities. While Jacob Dutton goes to Bozeman for business, Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) and Elizabeth “Liz” Dutton grapple with mortal peril at their homestead. Simultaneously, Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) makes his way back to Montana, his arrival crucial for the family’s wellbeing.
At the Season 2 premiere of the show in Los Angeles, Geraghty expressed his feelings about collaborating with Ford, who has just entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Red Hulk. “I really like Harrison,” Geraghty told People Magazine. “He’s a funny man, and he’s enthusiastic. He enjoys it. He takes it very seriously. He supports us actors.” Additionally, Geraghty admitted that working with such a legendary figure initially made him feel intimidated. He remembered stepping onto the set for the first time, feeling the pressure of the situation, knowing he would be sharing the screen with one of Hollywood’s top stars. “I thought I was going to pass out on my first day,” he admitted. “I was so nervous because when you get the chance to work with someone like that…actors who are larger than life, you have to push through the nerves.
Brian Geraghty on Picking Harrison Ford’s Brain: ‘Timing Is Everything’
It’s a relief that Dame Helen Mirren, who plays Cara Dutton, made the filming environment more relaxed. As Geraghty mentioned, “Helen made it so effortless for us.” Previously, Mirren herself expressed high regard for Harrison Ford. “Harrison is truly ‘one of the lads,'” Mirren said, using a British term for ordinary men. She continued, stating that the cast adores him because he’s friendly and considerate to everyone on set, which creates a welcoming atmosphere, even in cold conditions where they sit on peculiar, uncomfortable chairs. The other male actors often gather around Ford, simply to be near him. Mirren concluded, “He’s always so kind to the other actors.
According to Brian Geraghty, talking about Harrison Ford’s legendary roles is a matter of perfect timing. He only brings up the subject when it feels organic and the conversation is already flowing smoothly. Geraghty understands why one might want to move beyond past roles, even acknowledging his own irritation when fans bring up work he did a decade ago. However, if the question seems genuine and the discussion feels comfortable, he’s open to discussing it. Geraghty values building trust and finds delving into iconic roles can sometimes feel like overstepping boundaries. He prefers to keep conversations focused on the present, avoiding any sense of probing into Ford’s past accomplishments. Despite this, Geraghty was grateful for the time he spent working with Ford, as they shared nearly 80% of their scenes together. In fact, Geraghty found Ford’s humor made the entire experience even more enjoyable.
In the second season, Jacob and Cara Dutton face the challenge of settling their ranch’s taxes with Donald Whitfield. Simultaneously, Spencer is determined to make his way back to Montana to rescue his family, while Alexandra embarks on a voyage across the sea to be reunited with him. Fresh episodes of 1923 can be streamed every Sunday morning at 3:00 a.m. ET exclusively on Paramount+. The opening three episodes of Season 2 have already been released for viewing.
