Summary
- Black Clover went on hiatus due to being close to the manga, with Pierrot choosing to focus on other projects like Bleach: TYBW.
- Director Tatsuya Yoshihara hinted at a possible continuation of Black Clover, but Pierrot may prioritize other series first.
- Pierrot could announce Black Clover’s return at AnimeJapan 2025, but it may take time due to other project priorities.
There’s been a break in the airing of “Black Clover” for several years now, leaving both long-time viewers and more recent ones curious about the possibility of its return to screens soon. For newcomers, it could be especially frustrating because they might not realize that the current ending isn’t actually the final chapter of the story.
Could we possibly find out if the Black Clover anime is going to come back anytime soon, or should the production team at Pierrot hold off and complete it first? I think it would be helpful to delve into the progression of the series so far.
Why Was Black Clover Interrupted?
Black Clover concluded its run with episode 170 on March 30, 2021. At that point, the anime was almost catching up to the original manga, and Studio Pierrot opted to take a break from producing new episodes rather than creating additional storylines (filler arcs).
Furthermore, it was known that “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War” had been announced and was probably in the works. This shift marked a significant change for the studio, causing them to postpone other projects to focus solely on it. With the favorable response, Pierrot is now transitioning towards seasonal production. However, “Black Clover” has faced heavy criticism regarding the quality of its animation.
Even though there had been a break, the movie “Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King” made its global debut on Netflix in the year 2023.
Possible Hints at Black Clover’s Return

Currently, there’s no definitive news about the anime resuming soon, but Tatsuya Yoshihara, the series director, has hinted at a possible continuation of the story, suggesting that he aims to surpass the original TV anime. However, this could be due to misinterpretation or translation issues.
On March 22, 2025, Pierrot is expected to share updates during AnimeJapan 2025, which could potentially include news about the popular series “Black Clover.” Although they might be planning to restart the anime within a year or two, it’s plausible that they will divulge information regarding its progress.
Pierrot Might Have Other Priorities
It’s possible that a return of Bleach, possibly following a seasonal pattern similar to “Bleach: TYBW”, may have to wait while Pierrot prioritizes other projects. Word has it that the studio is delaying new Bleach episodes in favor of a special series commemorating Naruto’s anniversary (which was initially announced and postponed in 2023).
Apart from “Black Clover”, the studio Pierrot has also paused production on “Boruto” indefinitely. If either returns soon, it might be after the conclusion of Naruto and the final season of Bleach. If they can devise a suitable schedule, they could potentially work on both “Boruto” and “Black Clover”. This could mean releasing only one season or cour of each anime per year.
Excitedly speaking as a dedicated fan, I believe it’s wiser for Pierrot to hold off on adapting more seasons until the manga reaches its conclusion. With each chapter arriving only four times a year now (after a long break), it seems more fitting to let the story wrap up completely before diving back in. This approach ensures that the anime adaptation remains faithful to the original and gives us fans the best possible experience!
Where Will It Be Streamed If It Returns?
Since its initial release, “Black Clover” has been available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Yet, due to being initially released as an exclusive on Netflix, it’s conceivable that the movie might switch platforms if and when it is ever re-released elsewhere.
It’s quite possible that with a fresh season approaching, there will be new contract discussions regarding the series. Given the widespread popularity of Black Clover, numerous streaming platforms are keen to provide anime content. This interest may have led to talks about streaming the upcoming season since the show has been temporarily paused.
Black Clover is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in many languages.
