LEGO is establishing an in-house game development team to produce future video games. The company’s gaming journey dates back to the launch of the pioneering LEGO Island in 1997, which paved the way for numerous spin-offs tied to its diverse product lines. From 2005’s LEGO Star Wars, most LEGO games have primarily been developed by Traveler’s Tales, and they’ve covered a wide range of popular franchises such as Marvel, DC, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and many others.
As a fan myself, I must say that not every recent LEGO game has been created by Traveler’s Tales. Instead, the WWE 2K25 studio, Visual Concepts, took charge for LEGO 2K Drive, a racing title from 2023 which received mixed feedback due to its live-service features. Last year, Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo collaborated to bring us Lego Horizon Adventures – a more humorous spin on their Horizon series, reimagining the storyline of the first installment using LEGO minifigures.
LEGO is establishing an internal game development studio to produce future video games. As reported by The Guardian, the LEGO Company intends to boost its focus on digital play and grow its own team of developers. Additionally, they aim to blend the digital gaming experience with their physical products to create a more integrated experience. At present, no specific LEGO gaming projects have been announced, but this investment is said to be a long-term endeavor, and LEGO has expressed interest in collaborating with brands like Nike and Formula One.
Future LEGO Games Will Be Developed In-House
This development might spark fresh LEGO sports or racing games, or collaborations with established LEGO brands, and even crossovers with series like One Piece. For now, whispers abound that Traveler’s Tales is cooking up a new LEGO game for potential release in the coming year. This would mark their initial effort on any project since the launch of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in 2022. Furthermore, last year saw an unexpected update for the 2006 title LEGO Star Wars 2 when it was added to PS Plus Premium, introducing new achievements for the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.
Beyond the realm of traditional gaming, LEGO has been strengthening its bond with the gaming world by unveiling sets inspired by beloved franchises such as Super Mario, Animal Crossing, and Sonic the Hedgehog over recent years. This week, LEGO announced a colossal Mario Kart set featuring everyone’s favorite plumber and his iconic red go-kart – the newest addition to their line of sets themed around the popular racing series. As a fan, I can’t help but eagerly await further updates on what this new studio has in store for us!
