Final Fantasy’s Chance to Shine in the Mystery Dungeon Genre!

When it comes to Role Playing Games (RPGs), both Pokemon and Final Fantasy can be viewed as two complementary aspects of a single concept, sharing some common traits while also having distinct differences. For instance, Pokemon features collectible creatures, whereas Final Fantasy has party members, each offering unique abilities based on their statistics and functionalities. Both series are highly influential in the world of Japanese RPGs, leading to numerous spin-offs being developed by The Pokemon Company and Square Enix over the years due to their enduring popularity.

In simpler terms, the “Mystery Dungeon” spin-off games share some similarities between “Pokemon” and “Final Fantasy”. Created by Koichi Nakamura, who also co-created “Dragon Quest”, the “Mystery Dungeon” series is known for its randomly generated dungeons that players explore with a group of AI-controlled teammates. While it’s a spin-off genre for many RPGs, what makes “Pokemon” unique is that it allows players to become a Pokemon instead of the typical RPG character. However, there’s an opening for “Final Fantasy” to take advantage of the opportunities left by “Pokemon”.

It May Be Time For Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon to Fill the Void Pokemon’s Leaving Empty

The Silence With Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is Deafening

Even though the popularity of Pokemon has spread the recognition of the Mystery Dungeon series, it was actually Final Fantasy that initiated the concept with Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon in 1997. It wasn’t until 2005 that Pokemon joined the genre with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team. Since then, both versions of roguelikes have been able to thrive together, with Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon being released in 2007; the same year as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. However, after a short while, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon faded from view, allowing Pokemon to release Gates to Infinity and Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon in its absence.

The journey with Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon ends here. Interestingly, two spin-offs once more faced off, with a remastered version of Fables, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy, being released almost a year prior to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. These rereleases were warmly welcomed by Mystery Dungeon enthusiasts; however, there remains a significant fanbase eagerly awaiting a fresh, new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon title. Despite this longing, Pokemon has been directing its efforts towards other spin-off projects. Consequently, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon could potentially delight fans in the five-year gap since Rescue Team and Every Buddy.

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon May Have Some Growing Pains if it Wants to Take Pokemon’s Place

Games labeled under the “Mystery Dungeon” brand share a common structure, but it’s clear why “Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon” hasn’t matched the sales of “Pokemon” games in the same category. Unlike other titles in the genre, “Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon” incorporates elements from the “Final Fantasy” series, such as monsters, summons, and class dynamics. This spin-off might bewilder some players who expect it to be similar to “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon,” given its careful implementation of the Pokémon’s basic type and move dynamics, because “Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon” is a more complex take on the genre. In contrast, “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon” was designed to be a simpler introduction to the genre from the outset.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but ponder how the beloved Chocobo series could refine its established mechanics to smooth out the learning curve. The question is, how might it achieve this? There are numerous paths that Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon could explore to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Pokemon. Perhaps by incorporating more contemporary Final Fantasy elements or perhaps borrowing a leaf from World of Final Fantasy, focusing on the series’ beloved characters could be the way forward.

Being deeply entrenched in classic Final Fantasy rules, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon might need to adapt to gain an edge over other mystery dungeon options available today.

If players are yearning for the thrill of the Mystery Dungeon gaming style, they might be pleased to learn that the genre is thriving, just not exclusively within Final Fantasy and Pokemon series. A game called Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island was recently launched last year, garnering positive reviews and surpassing previous sales records for the Shiren series. Similar to other Mystery Dungeon titles, it features procedurally generated maps and employs roguelike mechanics, making it a must-try for fans who relish these types of adventures with Pikachu or Chocobo. At the very least, it will serve as an engaging pastime while eagerly anticipating the return of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon or Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon in the future.
