In the final scenes of “The Last of Us Part I”, Joel (Pedro Pascal) is undeniably not a paragon of righteousness. At Saint Mary’s Hospital, he ruthlessly eliminates the Fireflies, a militia striving for a cure, in an attempt to save Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from imminent death. Despite his questionable actions, gamers found themselves sympathizing with this tragic anti-hero by the end of the narrative. “The Last of Us Part II” aimed to scrutinize Joel’s honor, revisiting the events at Saint Mary’s Hospital from Abby’s perspective. It is disclosed that Joel was responsible for murdering her father during the massacre, and Season 1 emphasizes this act as harsh, brutal, and violent.

Despite Abby’s flaws, is it fair to say she holds a grudge against Joel, given his intentions towards Ellie were genuine? However, from the Fireflies’ and most others’ viewpoint, the main character inadvertently doomed the world’s last possibility of stopping the spread of the Cordyceps infection. Although this twist was intriguing in the first game’s narrative, it doesn’t guarantee that every aspect of this narrative arc was skillfully executed.

In The Last of Us Part II, the narratives for characters Ellie and Abby were divided into distinct segments, totaling around 20-25 hours of gameplay. This structure was challenging for many players, particularly given the darker tone of this sequel. Additionally, the fragmented timeline of the story didn’t effectively engage gamers with Abby as a character, which was crucial for understanding both perspectives in this moral examination. Players experienced Ellie’s narrative arc initially, and unfortunately, it started with the game’s most contentious scene.

Many players found it heartbreaking to discover they’d have limited time interacting with Joel, as his character met an early and violent end at Abby’s hands. The graphic scene where she brutally slaughters him with a golf club has sparked heated debates among fans. During the attack, Ellie is compelled to bear witness. This gruesome sequence was emotionally charged, causing many players to develop negative feelings towards Abby, making it challenging for them to connect with her narrative in the future.
