So if it doesn’t carry the tag of a league or association and a release date, chances are it’s not widely recognized.
It’s unfortunate that such a basic structure for sports has given rise to numerous enjoyable and intriguing games throughout history.
From various perspectives, you can explore the idea of either a fresh twist on a familiar sport or an entirely made-up game – be it a beloved pastime or a completely imaginary one.
Less popular sports and activities related to traditional sports sometimes introduce unique twists to games with well-established structures, whereas others strive to offer an authentic and captivating experience of the sport itself.
If there are two competitors facing off, regardless of whether the sport is fictional or not, it can still make for an exciting and engaging sports event.
10. Mutant Football League
Football Can Always Be More Violent
There’s a longstanding debate about American football being excessively brutal due to the high number of serious, potentially career-ending injuries among players. While this argument holds some weight in reality, let’s set aside concerns for a moment and imagine a world where safety rules are relaxed in the imaginary realm of storytelling. Why not explore a more violent version of the sport?
In the game named Mutant Football League, violence is rampant, serving as a contemporary equivalent to the classic Mutant League Football on the Sega Genesis. At first glance, it resembles traditional American football, where you lead a team of mutants and monsters in moving the ball from one point to another. However, the true essence lies in the chaos and brutality that unfolds on the field.
The distinction is two-part: initially, the areas are chock-full of perils, ranging from landmines to colossal, ravenous sandworms.

While golf is an esteemed game, perhaps it could use some added excitement. Instead of using clubs to hit balls, what if we used miniature catapults to launch small frogs instead?
2003’s “Ribbit King” introduces us to the zany universe of Frolf, a cosmic game where participants aim to propel their tiny frog companions towards a goal located at the opposite end of the playing field.
Instead of the usual game of golf where the ball is an inanimate object, in this unique version, your “ball” being a live creature adds a twist to the game. This frog will independently move towards bubbles or fly away on its own.
Apart from aiming to hit the target hole using the minimal number of attempts, strive to approach scoring zones along the way to maximize your score. This game is quite tactical, and it’s incredibly enjoyable when you play it with friends.
8. Windjammers 2
Frisbee In Your Face
Frisbees, often called “flying discs,” have a smaller presence in the world of sports compared to what one might expect. Given their simplicity to toss and long flight range, they could be utilized beyond just disc golf. Perhaps an exciting twist for tennis could be high-impact Frisbee?
2022’s Windjammers 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 1994 Neo Geo arcade original, offering a thrilling frisbee experience for two players. The objective in this game involves launching the disc into your opponent’s goal or forcing them to let it fall on their side of the court.
Each character you can control exhibits distinct modes for moving, tossing, catching, and other actions, plus unique special throws that send the disc flying in confusing trajectories.
In a more casual tone, Windjammers 2 satisfies the desire for intense combat games, offering a swift, strategic gameplay mechanism that requires exceptional skill and concentration.
7. NBA Jam (2010)
The Definitive Arcade Sports Game
1993’s NBA Jam continues to be cherished as a standout example of classic arcade sports gaming, and it does so for valid reasons. It effectively combined entertaining gameplay with an energetic style.
In the year 2010, a revamped edition of NBA Jam was launched on platforms like Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3. For the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, it was named “On Fire Edition”. Just like the original, the gameplay remained exceptional, but this time around, the style factor was significantly amplified to a maximum level.
The slam dunks grew larger and more intense, additional participants joined in, such as team mascots, and the legendary Tim Kitzrow tied everything up with his iconic exclamation “boom-shakka-lakka!
In its day, this game was well-received, but sadly, you can no longer buy it digitally. As a result, it’s become something of a hidden treasure by chance rather than design.
6. Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe
The Future Is Made Of Steel
A recurring theme in many dystopian sci-fi narratives is the existence of a bloodthirsty sport played under ultraviolet light. This sport could be contrived for settling disputes or simply as a form of entertainment. In the game Speedball 2, the preferred ultraviolent pastime is Speedball, which bears some resemblance to hockey or football, but with the aggression turned up to maximum.
On either side of the game, players use their hands to pass the ball, which hops across the field, gaining momentum or altering its course as it goes. The objective for your squad is to seize the ball and propel it towards the rival’s goal.
In each player, unique statistics progressively decrease as the match continues, and they can receive the ball. Since you’re allowed just three substitutions, you’ll need to make strategic decisions when players become too hurt to perform optimally.
5. Blades Of Steel
Fistfights Included
One enjoyable aspect of certain sports games lies in their ability to accurately depict the sport while also maintaining a touch of humor or the unexpected. For instance, Blades of Steel on the NES effectively showcases this combination, offering an authentic experience alongside a hint of the unconventional.
This hockey game is exceptionally crafted, offering swift and intuitive controls over your players, allowing you to take accurate shots at the net and nudge opponents aside with ease.
In such a scenario, if two players engage in several shoves, the game temporarily halts to emphasize the main spectacle of any ice hockey match – an old-school, intense brawl.
For this particular game, there’s a distinct control system where players can deliver blows and shield themselves from strikes at varying heights. It’s quite amusing that the victor escapes unpunished, while the defeated character receives a penalty and is sent to the punishment area.

Ponder over the most exceptional athletes throughout history, equipped with wheels for all types of terrain, side jets, and spinning magnetic systems – momentarily pause, though…
In simpler terms, “Regular Human Basketball” is an incredibly fun and zany party game where two teams of tiny creatures operate large, mechanical basketball players. You navigate inside these mechanical beasts to activate switches that control all the functions needed to dominate the court.
Working together harmoniously, you can pick up the ball using your reliable magnetic grasp, traverse steep slopes with robust wheels, and soar towards the basket with your propellers for an impressive slam-dunk.
If you’re feeling daring, you might consider taking control of your opponent’s character temporarily to disrupt their strategy, causing them significant problems as you guide your character towards scoring a goal instead.
3. Pyre
The Realest Fake Sport
People really enjoy heartwarming tales about underdogs, especially in the context of sports. It seems that the skilled team at Supergiant has a knack for crafting compelling narratives, and this talent extends to sports video games too.
In a touch of imaginative storytelling, the narrative revolves around a submerged, desolate landscape that serves as a prison for lawbreakers and felons, yearning for liberation.
To escape, however, these exiles are required to participate in an old tradition reminiscent of a three-player basketball match. Although it may seem abstract, the athletic competition is just as engaging as any other sport.
Over the course of the narrative, your group will encounter and recruit additional outcasts hailing from various species, each endowed with special traits and skills.
As the seasons pass, you’ll find yourself in the tough position of having to return one of your players to civilization. Maintaining competitiveness without them won’t be easy. This isn’t just any ordinary sports game; it has a captivating narrative that adds depth and tension.

Have you ever come across an anime where the main character goes to a specialized school, concentrating entirely on one particular hobby or sports activity?
Speaking naturally, if there were an anime focusing on dodgeball, it might resemble “Dodgeball Academy” quite closely.
In “Dodgeball Academia,” you progress in a sports-themed role-playing game (RPG). Each court win boosts your statistics, grants access to additional team members, and rewards you with fresh upgrades and equipment.
The game also features an engaging narrative, focusing on the character of Otto, a spirited youth with ambitions to become the greatest dodgeball player in history.
In the arena of dodgeball, matches commence with the traditional back-and-forth play, but as players gain momentum, they unleash extraordinary, almost supernatural skills. Back in the ’80s, I was part of the development team at Epyx, honing our skills on various games like these. Our third installment in this series aimed to attract a wider audience.
1986’s “World Games,” initially launched on the Commodore 64, provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in various global sports competitions, with some events being more unusual compared to others.
There are various activities you could participate in around the world such as log rolling in Canada, sumo wrestling in Japan, throwing tree trunks like cabers in Scotland, cliff diving in Mexico, and riding bulls in the U.S., along with many others.
