Pithead Studio, established by Jennifer and Björn Pankratz following Piranha Bytes’ shutdown, is seizing this opportunity as they create Cralon, a traditional dungeon-crawler infused with contemporary sensibilities. As the hero pursues a demon, he plunges into an abyss and must climb through the game’s stages in an effort to return to the surface again.

Pithead Studio aims to craft an immersive journey for gamers where they can deeply engage with the game world using their own decision-making skills. This is most effectively achieved through elements like battle and discovery, particularly in a genre known as dungeon crawling. In a chat with Game Rant, Pithead Studio shared insights about how they’re designing combat and exploration for their upcoming title, Cralon.

First-Person Combat Allows for an Immersive Experience

According to Pithead Studio, the game Cralon might incorporate an element of magical mystery related to dungeon puzzles and environment details. However, users won’t get to play as a wizard or sorcerer directly. Instead, they plan on including ammunition types such as firebolts. Pithead Studio aims to create a more realistic battle system for the players, offering a traditional gaming experience reminiscent of other genre titles.

The fight will be a genuine real-time clash involving both melee and ranged weapons. Being a first-person game, we drew inspiration from the combat style in Skyrim. Adversaries will have various methods of defense, and if you prefer not to engage them, there’s also an option for stealth. When you squat, an indicator (similar to the game Thief) will show whether or not you are being observed.

In the preview for the game named Cralon, we see a gloomy environment with the camera moving along dim corridors and completely dark caves. This stealth skill could be beneficial as you navigate through these areas, since it seems crucial to avoid or handle the menacing red-eyed creatures that live within this creepy dungeon.

Pithead Studio Sees Cralon as an Open-Tube Game

Regarding the game “Cralon” developed by Pithead Studio, they don’t categorize it as an open-world game. A more fitting description might be an “open-tube” game, since players can traverse multiple paths and uncover vast underground areas. However, despite this freedom, the players are confined beneath the ground. The optional areas offer opportunities for players to delve deeper into the backstory of “Cralon,” discovering artifacts, diaries, puzzles, and characters that add depth to what has previously been introduced. Each area serves a unique purpose in providing players with a better understanding of the intricate world within the game title. In our game design, each stage features a unique theme and aesthetic. Players will encounter larger hubs for exploration, inhabited by various species with their distinct histories and challenges. Each level of the mine will have its dominant faction, which sets it apart. We often compare our game to Arx Fatalis, but with a more contemporary feel and an indie twist. The mine itself is modeled after old mines common in our local area, the Ruhr region. However, due to its fantasy setting, certain areas deviate from this theme.

In their statement, Pithead Studio mentioned that gamers would find a dash of Indiana Jones-style allure as they venture into the diverse locations within the game, fostering feelings of curiosity and exploration. Although Cralon is set in a gloomy environment, it offers a mix of scenes to prevent monotony, ensuring players can immerse themselves without the possibility of getting bored by revisiting familiar terrain.
