Summary
- Joe’s story in “You” comes to an end in season 5, premiering April 24, 2025.
- Fans speculate that Kate Lockwood might become even more evil than Joe Goldberg.
- Viewers anticipate a twist in Kate’s character development in “You” season 5.
In 2018, when the first season of “You” debuted, audiences were initially drawn to the enigmatic character of Joe Goldberg, portrayed by Penn Badgley. This seemingly endearing and intellectual bookworm, however, concealed his true nature as a serial killer. Fast forward to 2025, on April 24th, “You” is set to return for its fifth and final season on Netflix. The trailer for the new season reveals that Joe and his new love interest, Kate Lockwood, played by Charlotte Ritchie, are residing in New York City.
I can’t wait to find out how Joe’s story concludes, and while I enjoyed the intricate love triangles involving Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), it was captivating to witness the dynamic between Joe and Kate. Given Kate’s intelligence, one might expect her to see through Joe’s deceptions; however, she seems just as entangled in his web as the other characters. As we approach the premiere of You season 5, I wonder if Kate will reveal a darker side and whether her character will undergo significant transformation, potentially even surpassing Joe in terms of evilness.
You Season 5‘s Trailer Is Here, And Could Kate Goldberg Follow In Joe Goldberg’s Evil Footsteps?
I find myself in agreement with numerous fan theories regarding season 5 of You, as I believe the final season will be full of surprises. However, upon watching the You season 5 trailer, I’m now convinced that Kate Lockwood will betray Joe Goldberg and end up being just as villainous, if not more so than him. At the outset of the trailer, Joe can be heard saying:
Greetings! It’s wonderful to see you again, back in the city considered the best on earth, all made possible by that extraordinary individual. Adjusting to fame was a challenge, but for lasting happiness, it seems you must let go of the past version of yourself.”
Or more concisely: “Welcome back to the world’s top city, courtesy of an exceptional person. Overcoming the novelty of fame was tough, but to find eternal joy, you must leave your old self behind.
It seems Kate’s diligence for her family business is met with underlying friction whenever she poses the question, “Are we supposed to eliminate everyone who doubts us for the foreseeable future?” This line, coupled with the fact that the show “You” is known for its unexpected turns, leads me to speculate that Kate might be hiding a separate life from Joe’s knowledge. Alternatively, it could be that Joe will undergo a transformation and Kate might find herself becoming a killer in the fifth season of You.
In my opinion, while I enjoy the thought of revisiting some familiar characters from the past seasons of “You”, I’m equally eager for season 5 to delve deeper into the character development of Kate. The reveal of Love Quinn as a killer in season 3 left me on the edge of my seat, and I’d love to see a similar surprise unfold in season 5. Given that Kate remains a somewhat enigmatic figure, I believe a plot twist involving her could prove even more intriguing.
In the third season of “You”, Joe finds himself yearning for an escape from his current life, believing Kate to be the key to a thrilling new chapter. However, if Kate were to reveal herself as a foe, it would introduce an intriguing twist. Characters like Paco (Luca Padovan) and Ellie Alves (Jenna Ortega) appear innocent, but Kate has hidden depths. Given her strained relationship with her wealthy family and her own dissatisfaction, she might mimic Joe’s behavior. Over time, she could come to see that Joe is a source of problems for her as well, leading her to potentially scheme against him.
For quite some time now, there’s been speculation among fans about whether Joe would eventually be exposed. In the finale of season 4 of You, rather than reporting Joe to the authorities, Kate chooses to stay with him and maintain their relationship. This leaves me questioning if she has a carefully laid plan for retribution and has been working on it for some time. Perhaps she’ll reveal his secrets in the public eye through TV or social media, which would certainly be surprising and shocking.
What Happened To Joe And Kate In You Season 4?

In the fourth season of “You,” which is set when Joe Goldberg relocates to London, he encounters Kate Lockwood. Initially, Kate views Joe as an alluring and intriguing new resident of the city, unaware of his murderous past. As Joe infiltrates Kate’s social circle, she gradually builds trust in him. By the end of season 4, titled “The Death of Jonathan Moore,” they have grown deeply attached, vowing to remain together. Both share a sense of being outcasts and this shared feeling brings them closer.
In the start of season 4 of You, Kate encounters Joe unaware of his true identity, which adds a chilling and unsettling aspect to their blossoming romance. In an interview with Vogue in 2023, Charlotte Ritchie discusses the character of Kate, who is both tough and intelligent, yet finds herself drawn into Joe’s deceptions. Ritchie explains:
It’s striking how she consistently struggles to convey her emotions. Her defenses are incredibly robust, and at times when a more emotionally balanced individual might feel distressed, she seems almost detached or insensitive to these feelings instead.
The actress indicated that Kate seems apprehensive about “people crossing her limits” and “it appears there might be something from her past that makes her cautious about such incidents.” I concur that Kate likely has a troubling and potentially heartbreaking history that deserves exploration, and I eagerly anticipate Kate taking the spotlight in You season 5.
