In the previous versions of Civilization, such as Civilization 6, several “Eras” were employed to mark approximate time periods during a player’s game. For example, when starting a match in Civilization 6, players would be in the Ancient Era, and advancing through technological research would lead them to the Classical Era. However, the structure of eras is significantly revamped in Civilization 7.
In the game of Civilization 7, players progress through three consecutive eras: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. At the onset of the Antiquity era, players select their civilization, establish their initial settlement, and embark on a vast expansion journey, gradually accomplishing objectives specific to each Age called a Legacy Path. Upon completing an era, players receive attribute points for their achieved goals, are asked to choose a new civilization, and are presented with fresh objectives. This process repeats for the Modern era, ending when one player achieves victory. The new age system in Civilization 7 has sparked some debate, but it could be an excellent fit for a 4X strategy game set in the Star Wars universe.
Civilization 7’s Three-Age Structure Would Suit Star Wars Perfectly
The Antiquity Age – The Fall of the Jedi
Incorporating the Age system from “Civilization 7”, a 4X strategy game set in the Star Wars universe could transport players through the significant periods of the Skywalker Saga’s timeline. The adventure would commence during the era, now known as “The Fall of the Jedi”, which spans the Star Wars prequels and the Clone Wars.
As a gamer in this immersive universe, I can select from an array of iconic figures who ruled during this epoch, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, Padme Amidala, Count Dooku, General Grievous, and Nute Gunray. The galaxy’s two primary alliances during this time would be the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, although the Jedi could also operate independently as a distinct faction. Each faction would have its own assortment of unique troops and structures tailored to the era – for instance, Clones for the Republic and Battle Droids for the CIS.
In each period, players are given a unique set of objectives tailored to their age group, leading them towards one of the game’s triumphant endpoints, much like in Civilization 7. For example, during the Fall of the Jedi era, players may be tasked with seizing as many settlements or planets as they can, mirroring the Republic and CIS’ struggle for dominance over various systems.
The Exploration Age – The Reign of the Empire
As the Jedi Order’s fall signals the start of the Imperial era, it becomes a logical choice for players to switch factions during this transitional period. This shift mirrors the emergence of new powers in the Star Wars timeline. Players who initially sided with the Republic can opt for the Empire or Rebellion, while those who backed the Confederacy of Independent Systems can pick from several criminal syndicates like the Hutts or Pykes.
The Modern Age – The Rise of the First Order
The final phase in a hypothetical strategy game inspired by both ‘Civilization 7’ and ‘Star Wars’, set within the timeframe of the sequel trilogy, known as “The Rise of the First Order”, would allow players to govern factions such as the First Order, the New Republic, the Resistance, and potentially the Imperial Remnant. Characters like Moff Gideon and Grand Admiral Thrawn could lead the Imperial Remnant in this scenario.
There’s More Than Enough Room for a Fourth Age
Ever since Civilization 7 hit the shelves, there’s been quite a buzz about the potential addition of a fourth era, often referred to as the “Atomic” Age. As a strategy game enthusiast like me, I can’t help but wonder what a Star Wars-themed strategy game could do with its own fourth age. If it were up to me, I’d love to see them delve into the Old Republic or High Republic eras, timelines rich in history that precede the fall of the Jedi.
