Title: Spectre Divide: The Shocking Shutdown You Didn’t See Coming!

Summary

  • Mountaintop Studios is closing following Spectre Divide‘s underwhelming first-season performance.
  • Spectre Divide’s support will end in the next 30 days, and Mountaintop Studios will close this week.
  • After its initial PC launch, the game was released for consoles in late February.

Mountaintop Studios, creators of Spectre Divide, have decided to shut down operations and discontinue support for their live-service game due to disappointing results from the game’s first season. This announcement was made just six months after releasing Spectre Divide, their inaugural title, in September 2024.

In 2020, a team consisting of veterans from studios like Naughty Dog, Respawn, Epic Games, and others banded together to establish Mountaintop Studios. Later, they embarked on their venture with the free-to-play shooter game, “Spectre Divide,” which could be played on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Initially, the game received a mixed response upon release, despite drawing encouraging levels of player engagement. A short while later, Mountaintop Studios decided to let go of 13 employees in an attempt to secure the longevity of “Spectre Divide.” Unfortunately, this move proved insufficient to ensure the survival of either the game or the studio, and both are now slated to shut down soon.

Mountaintop Studios’ CEO, Nate Mitchell, has announced that the company will be closing down by March 15, 2025, and support for their game, “Spectre Divide,” will end within a month. The decision was influenced by the lackluster reception to the game’s first season which launched on February 25. In the coming days, they will halt new in-game purchases and provide refunds for transactions made since Season 1: Flashpoint.

Mountaintop Studios Announces Decision to Close Down and Pull the Plug on Spectre Divide

Speaking about the closure of Spectre Divide, Mitchell explained that while the initial week was encouragingly optimistic, the Flashpoint season didn’t manage to attract a sufficient number of active players or generate enough income to cover the ongoing expenses of the game and the studio. This revelation comes only 16 days after the console launch, which coincided with the beginning of Season 1. Consequently, Mountaintop Studios has joined the growing list of studios that shut down in 2025, a list that includes branches of major AAA game developers such as Ubisoft.

In the upcoming weeks, enthusiasts of online shooter games will bid farewell to “Spectre Divide”, but a new game in the genre called “FragPunk” is currently garnering attention. Despite its remarkable player engagement on Steam, there’s anticipation about how long it can sustain interest with future updates.
