Summary
- Zacian and Zamazenta can transform into their Crowned Sword and Crowned Shield forms, gaining Steel-type and two powerful signature moves.
- Hoopa can change into Unbound form, gaining the type combination of Psychic and Dark, increased stats, and an impressive signature move called Hyperspace Fury.
- Primal Groudon and Kyogre undergo Primal Reversion in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which allows them to become extremely powerful.
The Pokemon series is jam-packed with innovative and thrilling gameplay elements that allow its iconic creatures to adopt new shapes, such as Mega Evolutions, Regional Variants, or Gigantamax. However, let’s not forget about the classic approach! What about those Pokemon that can transform regardless of a specific feature?
Indeed, you’re correct! Various Pokémon have the ability to metamorphose into different shapes within the game narrative, which often grants them an edge in battles due to their enhanced capabilities. Notably, these transforming Pokémon represent some of the franchise’s strongest examples. However, it is crucial to clarify that we are excluding Mega Evolutions, Regional Variants, and Gigantamax Forms from this list since the transformations should be intrinsic to each Pokémon’s unique physiology.
8. Zacian And Zamazenta
Heroes Of Many Battles / Crowned Sword And Crowned Shield
- Base Stat Total: 670 (Crowned)
In the world of Pokemon Sword and Shield, the legendary duo Zacian and Zamazenta, depicted in the game’s box art, are intriguing due to their initial weakened state at the start of the player’s journey. Known as “Hero of Many Battles,” they can only unleash their full power after acquiring the Rusted Sword (for Zacian) and Rusted Shield (for Zamazenta).
Zacian and Zamazenta primarily belong to the Fairy-type and Fighting-type categories respectively; however, when they metamorphose into their Crowned Sword (Zacian) and Crowned Shield (Zamazenta) forms, they acquire a secondary Steel-type. These transformations enhance their stats significantly, granting them the ability to wield their devastating signature moves: Behemoth Blade and Behemoth Bash. These moves pack quite a punch, particularly when deployed against Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokemon such as Eternamax Eternatus.
7. Hoopa
Confined / Unbound
- Base Stat Total: 680 (Unbound)
Similar to many legendary Pokémon preceding it, Hoopa tends to be more powerful than most common Pokémon. Yet, compared to other creatures boasting comparable base stats, it appears weaker, particularly due to its unfortunate type pairing of Psychic and Ghost. However, when engaged with a Prison Bottle, the Trickster Pokémon can transform into its Unbound form, significantly altering its prowess.
Hoopa Unbound is a formidable opponent to face. It significantly boosts its overall stats by 80 points and transforms its type to Psychic and Dark, making it less vulnerable due to fewer weaknesses. Additionally, it can utilize the powerful physical move, Hyperspace Fury, which is of the Dark-type, inflicts 100 damage, bypasses Protect, and disregards the target’s Defense stat. It’s astonishing that a seemingly adorable and diminutive Pokemon can transform into such an immense force of devastation.
6. Dialga, Palkia, And Giratina
Altered / Origin
- Base Stat Total: 680 (Origin Formes)
Giratina is well-known for being among the initial Box Art Legendaries to receive an alternate form. The Origin Forme of Giratina was introduced in Pokemon Platinum, enhancing its stats slightly and altering its ability to Levitate, which made it more intriguing and powerful than the other two Myth Pokemon, Dialga and Palkia.
In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, three iconic Pokemon – Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina – were given Origin Formes to balance out the gameplay experience. While Origin Dialga and Origin Palkia didn’t acquire new skills, they did receive improved stats, and their signature moves, Roar of Time and Spacial Rend, respectively, received a significant power-up in these forms. Additionally, Giratina’s signature move, Shadow Force, was also strengthened within this game.
5. Calyrex
Normal / Shadow Rider / Ice Rider
- Base Stat Total: 680 (Riders)
Initially, Pokemon Calyrex might not appear to be overly powerful or menacing due to its peculiar appearance, unfavorable type combination, and a base stat total of 500, which is relatively average for a Legendary. However, when it equips the Reins of Unity, it transforms into its formidable Shadow Rider and Ice Rider forms by partnering with Spectrier and Glastrier respectively.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, upgrading my base stats to 680 is quite an achievement, but it’s these two forms – Calyrex (Spectrier) and Calyrex (Glastrier) – that truly shine in the competitive Pokemon scene. They stand out with their impressive type combinations, not just any moves, but Astral Barrage and Glacial Lance, and let’s not forget their unique ability, As One. This allows them to use two abilities simultaneously, making them formidable opponents indeed. I can’t help but feel that Calyrex is incomplete without Spectrier and Glastrier, and the feeling is mutual – they need each other too.
4. Kyurem
Normal / Black / White
- Base Stat Total: 700 (Black/White)
Kyurem is renowned for its unique capacity to combine with Zekrom and Reshiram, two other members of the Tao Trio, through the use of DNA Splicers – an item it employs. This fusion grants it access to its Black and White forms, and it’s only a single step away from becoming the original dragon that was separated into three distinct Pokemon.
Surely, the Black and White variations of Kyurem receive a minor yet crucial enhancement to their initial stats and they acquire the ability to utilize Zekrom and Reshiram’s unique skills (which can bypass other Pokemon’s abilities). Additionally, these forms of Kyurem gain access to Freeze Shock and Ice Burn, respectively – formidable Ice-type attacks that possess the destructive power equivalent to Electric and Fire-type moves.
3. Zygarde
10% / 50% / Complete
- Base Stat Total: 708 (Complete)
In the games Pokemon X and Y, Zygarde initially appeared as a typical Legendary Pokemon with a snake-like form concealed within an ordinary cave. However, when Pokemon Sun and Moon were released, fans were taken aback to discover that Zygarde is actually known as the Order Pokemon, possessing five distinct forms (based on the number of Zygarde Cells it contains), with only three of these forms accessible for gameplay.
The partially wolf-like form of Zygarde is comparatively less potent, but its ultimate form, Complete Zygarde, is renowned for being among the most powerful Pokémon across the entire franchise. This form boasts a robust combination of Dragon and Ground types, and it possesses four unique signature moves, one of which is the destructive Core Enforcer. In essence, Complete Zygarde is a formidable adversary and it’s expected that all its forms will significantly impact the upcoming saga, Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
2. Necrozma
Normal / Dusk Mane / Dawn Wings / Ultra
- Base Stat Total: 754 (Ultra)
Necrozma amplified the intrigue of Kyurem to unprecedented heights. This Prism Pokemon has a unique ability to merge with the two Box Art Legendaries of its era, Solgaleo and Lunala. By doing so, it unlocks its Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms. These transformations of Necrozma don’t just acquire the secondary type and signature moves of their corresponding Pokemon, but they also receive an additional 80 points to their overall stats.
In its own right, Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma are formidable Pokémon, but they truly shine when equipped with the Ultranecrozium Z, transforming into Ultra Necrozma. This Psychic and Dragon type boasts an impressive base stat total of 754 and a signature ability called Neuroforce, which boosts the power of its super-effective attacks. To add to its might, it’s the only one with access to the game’s most potent Z-Move, Light That Burns the Sky. There’s no doubting that Ultra Necrozma is among the most menacing, fearsome, and devastating creatures in the franchise, and fortunately, it’s not found in every single Pokémon game.
1. Groudon And Kyogre
Primal Reversion
- Base Stat Total: 770 (Primal)
Initially, Groudon and Kyogre appeared to be less formidable than other Box Art Legendaries introduced subsequent to them within the Pokémon universe. However, the 3DS remakes of generation three games, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, significantly boosted their power with a feature called Primal Reversion, transforming them into two of the most potent Pokémon in the entire franchise.
In a significant boost, both Primals Groudon and Kyogre receive a 100-point increase across all their stats. They also acquire two powerful signature moves – Precipice Blades and Origin Pulse. Furthermore, their weather-summoning abilities have been upgraded, allowing them to counteract each other. This is particularly significant for Primal Groudon, being a dual-type Ground/Fire Pokemon, as it now stands on equal ground against its rival. It’s worth mentioning that these primal forms are incredibly destructive, as they are effectively designed to be countered by Mega Rayquaza – a Pokemon known for its immense power and often considered one of the most powerful ever created.
