The Silent Hill franchise has been a staple in the horror genre for the last two decades, with an array of video games, movies, novels, and more, all set within the same connected universe. Many of the titles center around the titular town itself, while others depart from the physical location, and explore other facets of psychological horror in disturbing and fascinating ways.

With the announcement of Silent Hill F, the eighth mainline game in the series, fans are eager to see where Konami will take the franchise next, with the developers mentioning that they wanted it to feel distinctively different, whilst still paying homage to the series’ original games. The trailer itself gives a brief glimpse into the town of Ebisugaoka, and the horrors that lie within, including more than a few secrets and details that are worth paying attention to and getting excited for.

8. The Protagonist Is Already Dead

One of the first lines said in the trailer itself is “Hinako’s dead, okay?”, referring to the protagonist and the character the player will be controlling. Now there are two ways of reading this line, which is believed to be said by either a friend or another individual related to the character, one is scary but the second is even more terrifying.

Either, Hinako is physically dead, whether right from the start of the story or towards the end, making this line a sentence uttered after the player is killed. The second reading is that Hinako as an individual, her soul, and her humanity is gone, removed by some otherworldly force that it yet to be fully understood and will be uncovered during the course of the a playthrough.

The Beauty And Brutality of Nature

It doesn’t take long into the trailer before an infection of blood-red flowers overcomes the village, and almost seems to chase the protagonist wherever she goes. There is a lot to unpack when it comes to the specific choice of flower, being the lycoris radiate otherwise known as the red spider lily. The redness in the flowers is known to represent death, with specifically the lily being known as a sign of rebirth, two symbols important to the genre and the series as a whole.

The secondary aspect is a deeper reading of the name itself. Spider lily immediately makes heads turn and Japan has no shortage of spider-like entities in folklore such as the Jorōgumo, a horrifying shapeshifter that can take on the form of a beautiful woman, concealing a hidden form of many arms and legs, the perfect enemy for the setting and the game.

Puppets and mannequins have always been staples in horror; With their expressionless faces and uncanny appearance, they are enough to spook even veteran horror fans. In the trailer, there is a flash of what appears to be a cracked white face that could be a representation of the protagonist or perhaps an enemy the player will encounter in the game. There is also a manequinn-like enemy seen chasing Hinako, contorting in gruesome ways with pale white skin and bloodied limbs.

The white skin is reminiscent of porcelain, which dolls and statues are known to be commonly comprised of, which could also be another origin for this disturbing jumpscare. Porcelain in Eastern culture is typically a symbol of longevity, purity, and eternity, all of which either exist in some form in the Silent Hill universe or work directly at odds with the evils within it.

5. Scarecrows

A Warder No Longer

With so much going on and a lot to unpack, viewers would be forgiven for missing a subtle detail hidden early on in the trailer. In the rice fields, there is a scarecrow standing alone, with its hat removed, exposing its plain head. By itself, it doesn’t seem like much, but later on, another scarecrow-like entity shows up, this time dressed in school uniform, making it more than a coincidence to be included.

Kuebiko is a deity in Japanese culture, symbolizing wisdom growth, and knowledge, depicted as a scarecrow with a straw hat. With the hat removed and left to rot, it can be assumed that the village will follow suit, no longer having the protection of this deity, with other evil lifeforms mocking it in its absence. Whether the scarecrow will turn out to be a challenging boss or some other kind of obstacle will become clear in time, but in any case, it is terrifying and unsettling just from appearance alone.

Tragedy Is All Around

It’s evident, even without the disclaimer, that the game Silent Hill f is going to delve deep into intense themes and evoke strong emotions in players, probing their psyches extensively. A recurring visual motif in the trailer is the persistent appearance of fabric hanging from various sources such as ropes, pipes, and power lines.

In Japan, there is a custom whereby individuals will hang up cloth to mark areas that are sacred and holy, potentially being echoed in the trailer itself as there is a number of locations that appear to be shrines. But there is a segment where the camera lingers for a while on a painting of a Rokurokubi and a few others in a scene of terrifying nature. The Rokurokubi is a Yokai that appears like a normal person, but has the ability to stretch or detach its head, the former of which is seen in the painting. This is the kind of mechanic or boss that could be incredibly challenging and horrifying to fight, with body horror a staple in the series since its inception, so it makes sense to call upon all manner of folklore and legends to inspire the ruthless enemies that will exist in the world.

When exploring the worlds of the series, there are several moments and even just the general setting that make the whole thing feel very dreamy. There are many fan theories and reveals that corroborate this idea, and it would certainly explain many of the phenomena that occur, like shifting between planes and, of course, the entities that are found there.

There is a line that suggests that the dreaminess may be carried forward into the new game, where a hint that the player will be able to enter dreams, control the world as if it were one, or that the entire plot is taking place inside someone’s head.
