The game ‘Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus’, developed by Squid Shock Studios, is preparing to roll out its first significant expansion called The Tanuki Kabuki DLC. This addition is set to be released later in 2025, and it aims to improve the gaming experience within ‘Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus’. Initially launched on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch in July 2024.
As an action platformer, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus puts players into the shoes of the titular protagonist, who must travel across a Japanese folklore-inspired world filled with mythical beasts. On this journey, Bo can use its shape-shifting staff and magical Daruma dolls to defeat a variety of enemies. Upon its launch, the Humble Games-published title received positive scores, eventually becoming one of the notable indie releases of the year. Most recently, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus devs shared their plans to expand the original side-scrolling game with a host of additional content coming as part of the game’s newly revealed DLC.
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus announced that the Tanuki Kabuki expansion is headed as a content update to Steam this year, with the date for its arrival on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles to be shared later. The major highlight of this forthcoming DLC is its unique Boss Rush mode, which Squid Shock Studios describes as akin to “an interactive Kabuki theater experience.” This mode lets the player take on the game’s various bosses, on a theater stage, in front of an audience that reacts to how the battle unfolds. Importantly, evoking a favorable reaction from the viewers provides better rewards for the player’s efforts. To take the challenge of the Boss Rush mode up a notch, there are optional seals and self-imposed handicaps that can be enabled, which offer improved rewards as well. Moreover, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus players can partake in the Boss Rush mode in two ways, either by taking on one boss at a time in Solo Mode or by going through a series of bosses in the Gauntlet Mode.
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus Tanuki Kabuki DLC is Coming Later in 2025
Apart from the aforementioned Boss Rush mode, there are a few other additions coming with the Tanuki Kabuki DLC. First off, a new Tanuki Tracker quest will see Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus fans hunt down tanuki hidden throughout the Strange Garden in exchange for Kabuki theater-related bonuses, such as the Combat Rehearsal Room, the Tanuki Kabuki Band, and a display room for collectibles. The update will also feature a new gachapon machine using which the player can get their hands on up to 77 unique Sagara dolls. On top of that, Chiptune Remix EP will also roll out with the DLC, bringing popular tracks from the game’s soundtrack with an 8-bit twist.
Interestingly, the latest announcement coincides with an ongoing Steam discount that incentivizes interested users to try out Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus before the DLC comes out. The highly-rated game is selling for USD 13.99 (30% discount) on Steam till March 20, 10 AM PST or 1PM EST.
