Summary
- Controller disconnection in Hogwarts Legacy can turn a smooth boss fight into a disaster in a flash.
- The Riparian Troll is a tough boss in the game, and it can catch players off guard.
- Disconnection issues can ruin crucial moments in games.
A Hogwarts Legacy player recently learned an important lesson about the importance of keeping controllers charged or plugged in after their controller disconnected at a terrible time. Combat is Hogwarts Legacy isn’t known for being exceptionally difficult, but an ill-timed disconnection can make things go from good to bad in a flash.
The Riparian Troll is among the hardest bosses in Hogwarts Legacy, making its first appearance in the franchise via the action-RPG, as it had never been mentioned in any lore prior to the game’s launch. Found exclusively in the Dale Family Tomb dungeon near the northeast corner of the Hogwarts Valley region, this massive boss is a modified version of the common Mountain Troll enemy type, but with a lot more hit points, making battles against it a lot more drawn out.
While the Riparian Troll and its macabre home are tied to the ‘Beeting’ a Curse quest in Hogwarts Legacy, the boss fight can also be started by players who are just exploring the various locations in the game, and the Riparian Troll will respawn if players pick up the quest after killing it the first time. This player found themselves facing the massive monster through sheer curiosity. After a relatively smooth fight in the early stages, they had whittled its health bar down significantly when disaster struck in the form of a dead controller battery, forcing them into an unusually tight spot.
Harry Potter and the Importance of Charging PlayStation Controllers
The player was using a PlayStation 4 Pro console during gameplay, and though some players benefited from having consoles that automatically pause games when controllers disconnect, it wasn’t enough to completely prevent a problem in this case. The Riparian Troll had a unique move set consisting of two unblockable club swipes followed by an overhead smash. The automatic pause allowed the player to avoid being defeated while they swapped out controllers, but it also disrupted their timing. After a failed dodge attempt, the player was hit directly by the Troll’s smash attack. However, they managed to recover with the help of a Wiggenweld health potion and eventually won the boss fight. The disconnection added an element of excitement to the battle while it lasted.
Disconnection issues can ruin a lot more than just a single boss fight. Back in 2023, a controller disconnection in Spider-Man: Miles Morales made a different player miss out on the hero’s dramatic rescue scene during the game’s climactic moments, ruining the cathartic sense of payoff that players expect when seeing a game through to its final moments.
