There are many types of jutsu in Naruto, and one of the most interesting is genjutsu, a way to use chakra to trap enemies in illusions from which they will find it difficult to escape. Kishimoto is very creative when it comes to world building in Naruto.

It turns out that there are ninjas who have a strong resistance to genjutsu, which might come as a surprise to some. This is because, if all ninjas were highly susceptible to it, then genjutsu users would become too powerful and shinobi might focus solely on mastering this skill. One character who exhibits this unusual resistance is Sakura. But what caused her to develop this resistance?

What Is Genjutsu in Naruto?

Genjutsu is a type of jutsu that requires chakra manipulation to perform (the only type of jutsu that doesn’t use chakra is taijutsu). It affects the target’s mind, creating illusions. “Gen”, in Japanese, means “illusion”, “phantom”, “vision” (at least in this case).

Instead of controlling their own chakra, the users of genjutsu control the chakra flow in their opponent’s/target’s bodies, and use it to affect their senses and make them fall for illusions. Typically, genjutsu is performed through a medium, such as a finger or an eye — the Sharingan, for example, allows users to perform many genjutsu.

There are a few ways in which a victim can counter or break free from genjutsu, like suffering pain not caused by the genjutsu, disrupting their own chakra to a point that it dissipates the genjutsu (the victim can do this if they realize they are inside a genjutsu, or else an ally should do it for them) — in the anime, strong smells can also bring a victim back from it. Sharingan users have even more ways to free themselves from genjutsu, once they can more easily realize they are under its influence.

Early Sign of Sakura’s Resistance to Genjutsu

In the manga, while Sakura is part of Team 7, Kakashi observes that Sakura has consistently excelled in managing her chakra, a skill that puts her at an advantage compared to her peers. Impressively, he even went so far as to say that she surpassed Sasuke in this area, and was capable of breaking free from weaker genjutsu at an early stage.

How Could Sakura Have Developed Genjutsu Resistance

The series never explicitly addresses this, but since chakra control is important to breaking free from genjutsu, Sakura was able to refine her skills while training with Tsunade. Medical ninjutsu, the area in which she specializes, requires advanced chakra control, and Sakura becomes one of the best in the field. It is said that she has perfect control of her chakra.

Although Sakura never specifically trained to counter genjutsu, her dedication to mastering medical jutsu likely led to her becoming resistant to it. This is because she honed her chakra control skills to the utmost level. In essence, Sakura’s exceptional chakra control may have made her immune to genjutsu.

Resistance Does Not Mean Immunity

It is important to note that being resistant to genjutsu does not mean being fully immune to it. Sakura can fall for it, as she did by the end of the original manga, when Sasuke places her in a genjutsu created by the Rinnegan.

As an avid fan of Naruto, I can’t help but imagine Sakura’s potential if she decided to delve deeper into genjutsu mastery. With her exceptional chakra control, she could undeniably excel in this area too! Her ability to manipulate chakra so effectively opens up a vast realm of possibilities in the realm of genjutsu, making me believe that she would indeed become an even stronger user in this field.
