Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is both famous and infamous for being extremely long, as this epic story about pirates has spanned over the course of thousands of manga chapters and anime episodes. Of course, a work of fiction as extensive as this one has featured a massive cast of characters, all with their own individual personalities and relationships.
Because of this, several prominent One Piece characters have formed close and endearing friendships that have a positive impact on their development, their personalities, and even their battle abilities. Needless to say, friendship is a key factor in a world as dangerous and ruthless as this one, and the following duos are the absolute best examples of this phenomenon.
8. Koby And Helmeppo
Former Enemies Who Got Stronger Together
It’s almost impossible to believe that Captain Koby the Hero and his Lieutenant Commander, Helmeppo, used to be enemies at one point, because nowadays, they are very good friends who are focused on rescuing innocent people, to the point that they joined SWORD together.
Early on in the story, Koby was a weak young man who wanted to join the Marines, and Helmeppo was just the spoiled son of “Axe-Hand” Morgan. After the rookie pirate Monkey D. Luffy took down Helmeppo’s father, they both joined the Marine forces and trained together under Monkey D. Garp, where they both got stronger and their close friendship blossomed. Now, Koby always has Helmeppo’s back and vice versa, and their dynamic of “enemies who became friends” is downright delightful.
7. Nami And Vivi
Two Strong Girls Who Complement Each Other
In a series as male-centric as One Piece, it is always nice to see well-written female characters getting along and forming relatable friendships. One of the best examples is Nami, the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates, and Nefertari Vivi, the brave princess of the Arabasta Kingdom, who befriended each other when Vivi allied with the Straw Hat Pirates to take down the villainous Sir Crocodile.
While Nami is brash and hot-headed, Vivi is kind and calm, so their contrasting personalities really do endearingly complement each other. They have repeatedly proven that they were willing to go the extra mile for one another. Vivi took good care of Nami when she got sick after the Little Garden arc, and Nami later fought against the powerful agents of Baroque Works during the Arabasta Arc. Unfortunately, they had to go their separate ways after Crocodile was defeated (something that made both of them visibly sad), but most fans are hoping that the Princess of Arabasta will reunite with her good friend and the rest of the Straw Hats soon.
6. Robin And Franky
Two Straw Hats Who Went Through A Life Or Death Situation Together
Every single member of the Straw Hat Pirates has a close and fun friendship with each other, but some of them are obviously stronger and more interesting than others, with one of the most noteworthy ones being the close relationship between Nico Robin and Franky. This makes a lot of sense, though, seeing as both permanently joined the crew around the same time following the legendary Enies Lobby Arc.
When they were both captured by CP9, Robin and Franky frequently supported each other and shared many conversations about their will to live, which resulted in the archaeologist playing a key role in recruiting the cyborg for the crew, and they clearly grew to respect and care for each other. After that, Robin and Franky shared many scenes in subsequent arcs, in which they displayed the close friendship they had formed and repeatedly acted as the “adults” of the Straw Hat Pirates.
5. Kid And Killer
A Dangerous Pirate Captain And His Loyal Right-Hand Man
Eustass “Captain” Kid may be a ruthless, impulsive, and dangerous captain, but he is still able to form legitimate friendships with other people, like with his childhood friend and fellow member of the crew, Killer. They have always had extreme loyalty to each other and built an incredible bond that is not too different from that of Luffy and Zoro.
While they have displayed their mutual trust via their many battles, they have also starred in several key scenes in which they proved how far they were willing to go for the other. Kid tried to rescue Killer after the Beasts Pirates had captured him, and when Killer got caught by Basil Hawkins’ voodoo powers, he tried his best not to harm his captain. Furthermore, their different personalities resulted in a hilarious dynamic, with one of them being reckless and the other being the “voice of reason” of the crew.
4. Brook And Laboon
A Beautiful Friendship Between A Musician And A Whale
Of course, not every incredible friendship in One Piece has to be solely between two human characters because numerous people have formed a close bond with animals. For example, back when he was part of the Rumbar Pirates, Brook and his crew found, befriended, and adopted a small whale calf who enjoyed their music. He personally named the whale Laboon.
Sadly, the Rumbar Pirates had to leave Laboon behind just before they entered the Grand Line, and they all tragically died at the hands of another crew of pirates a few years later. Nevertheless, the now adult whale is still waiting for them and, since Brook was revived by the powers of the Yomi Yomi no Mi, his sole mission and main purpose in life is to meet Laboon once again in Reverse Mountain. Their long-awaited reunion is the force that drives Brook, and it will undoubtedly result in a heartbreaking scene that will leave longtime fans in tears.
3. Luffy And Usopp
Two Young, Enthusiastic Boys Who Went On An Epic Adventure Together
Monkey D. Luffy may be the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, one of the Four Emperors, and the new incarnation of the Sun God Nika, but he is still a friendly young man who values his friendships with others, and the bond he shares with his fellow crew member, Usopp, is extremely important to both of them.
Despite all his power and his responsibilities, Luffy’s friendship with Usopp is surprisingly realistic, as they both enjoy going on silly adventures together, telling jokes, and even pranking each other. They did have a tough falling out during the Water 7 Arc due to a disagreement about the fate of the Going Merry, but they eventually reconciled, and their relationship became even stronger as a result. Luffy trusts Usopp, and he would have gotten nowhere without him, no matter how weak or cowardly his friend may be.
2. Roger And Rayleigh
These Legendary Pirates Had An Incredible Friendship That Changed The World
Gol D. Roger would never have been able to become the Pirate King if it wasn’t for his trustworthy crew of strong and loyal pirates, with his vice-captain, Silvers Rayleigh, being the most notorious example. After all, they met back when they were much younger, and they founded the crew together after Rayleigh let Roger use his small boat just so they could both “turn the world upside down.”
But that was just the beginning of a legendary friendship. They got stronger, fought many opponents, sailed the seas, and even found the One Piece together, which meant they managed to fulfill their initial promise. On top of that, Rayleigh demonstrated how much he cared for his dear friend when he teared up after Roger was executed by the World Government. Additionally, he went on to spend the rest of his life spreading his good friend’s will, which led to him meeting and taking Monkey D. Luffy under his wing, and he is sure the young pirate has what it takes to become Roger’s successor.
1. Luffy And Zoro
Two Powerful Pirates Who Trust And Care For Each Other
There’s arguably no friendship in One Piece that is as fun, endearing, and inspiring as the one between Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro. The young swordsman was the very first member of the crew the protagonist recruited, and even though they had their differences, they eventually befriended each other and formed an extremely close bond. Luffy dreams of becoming the Pirate King, while Zoro dreams of becoming the World’s Strongest Swordsman, and since they both know they need each other to achieve their ambitious dreams, they are extremely supportive of one another.
On top of that, Luffy blindly trusts and admires Zoro and vice versa, which has led to multiple heroic sacrifices and incredible team-ups during challenging fights—and they have proven they are willing to die for each other, which perfectly exemplifies how close they truly are. Kid and Roger had very similar friendships with their respective first mates, but Luffy and Zoro are on a whole other level, and nobody else in One Piece even comes close to their level of mutual trust, support, and affection.
