Finding anime with unique worldbuilding in times when the Fantasy genre is reigning supreme is actually not so easy as it might seem. Some series follow similar patterns (named tropes) and their worldbuilding is hellbent on following Western-like standards in terms of fantasy, society construction, and even magic systems.
But, there are hidden gems of different colors among a sea of pearls. Anime with unique worldbuilding that is both enticing and attractive for the fans of fantasy-like adventures. So, in this list, readers will find seven options to quench their thirst for fantasy-like adventures and, at the same time, dive into mysterious new worlds with unique settings.
Übel Blatt
Combines The Gore Of Berserk With Gothic Horror And British Myths
Übel Blatt (Evil Blade) is a series that has a lot in common with franchises like Berserk and Claymore: A Gothic Horror mood, loaded with dark fantasy worldbuilding, and lots of gore. It’s a revenge story, of a man seeking to destroy those who murdered him. Reincarnated as half-elf child, an old warrior carves a bloody path using the power of his fairy lineage and his unparalleled swordsmanship.
This anime has deep ties with British Folklore and Myths: the main protagonist is a member of the Fae-folk (Fairy) or (Half-Elf in some translations), who is empowered under the light of the moonlight. Throughout the series, fans will also notice some other important details like the construction of the society, the legend of the 14 heroes (like the 14 Knights of the Round table), and the creatures and monsters that appear on it. It is a refreshing take on the usual grimdark fantasy that often relies on the most canonical monsters and creatures.
Magic Maker
A Boy Tries To Introduce Magic To A World Devoid Of It
In every standard Isekai, the protagonist reincarnates in a world full of magic and mythical creatures. But contrary to the trend, Magik Maker, sends the protagonist (Shion) into a unique journey of discovery and creation after he is disappointed to find out there’s not an ounce of magic in his new world.
His conviction to introduce a magic system into a world where there’s nothing similar is what drives the plot and creates a unique setting where a hard-working researcher-type MC fills that empty void with his sense of discovery and unyielding enthusiasm.
Welcome To Japan Ms. Elf
Going Back And Forth Between Two Worlds
In this laid-back romantic adventure Isekai, the protagonist is transported to another world every night and lives two different lives. In one world, Kazuhiro is a common citizen of Japan, but when he dives into his dreams, he lives adventures alongside Marie, a young Elf who has become more than a friend (but less-than-lovers) for him.
However, what makes this vibrant universe fascinating is the point where Kazuhiro and Marie learn that she can journey to Japan alongside him. Consequently, we embark on an adventure that involves traversing both realms during the daytime, while simultaneously leading two lives. This narrative is brimming with tender, heartfelt instances.
Promise of Wizard
A Hero Is Summoned And Trains Wizards To Fight The Moon
Promise of Wizard displays a complex and intricate worldbuilding where the world is divided into five different regions (or Kingdoms) each of them with its own political system and societal customs. But, the real spice of this action/fantasy series is the catalyst for the conflict of the story: the phenomenon known as The Great Calamity, which happens every year and takes the form of a giant evil moon.
Unlike many Isekai anime, in this series, the chosen hero doesn’t come to save the fantasy realm but instead educates various wizards from across the globe on how to defeat a supernatural threat. This show is captivating, full of unexpected turns, and offers a fresh take on the genre.
The Beginning After The End
One Of The Most Anticipated Fantasy Manhwa Adaptations
The Beginning After the End is about to hit Crunchyroll (on April 2, 2025), and fans of fantasy anime should be excited about this Manhwa series becoming an anime for several reasons. One of them is its unique approach to worldbuilding, which takes inspiration from various oriental cultures but mixes it with its Western-like fantastic style to create a perfect balance.
The story is also a little bit different from most Isekais where the protagonist is transported from Japan or Korean, and instead, the MC is drawn from a Dieselpunk world, where he was a Monarch who ended up being betrayed by his subjects. Quite a splendid story, with lots of intense action scenes, and incredible character developments. A must-watch for every fan of Sword & Sorcery stories.
The Water Magician
A New Kind Of Isekai Story
The Water Magician is yet another interesting approach to worldbuilding, where there are several tropes from regular Isekais, but with the addition of certain particular tropes like the “Hermit hero” and the “Single-talented MC” taken to the extreme. It’s a particularly unique tale where the unexpected always comes into play, and for those who have read the Light Novel, has become quite addictive as well.
Though the story begins like most isekais, with a hero from Japan landing in a fantasy world, his story takes a dark twist when he discovers that he has landed in some sort of Monster Hunter-like universe with ferocious beasts that will constantly try to eat him. He is gifted with proficiency in Water Magic and an Immortal body, which makes him stand out from the regular MC from fantasy tales. The protagonist ends up living in isolation, away from society for two decades, which makes him develop a quirky personality. The Water Magician will arrive on July 2025.
Witch Watch
A Quirky Urban Fantasy RomCom With An Interesting Worldbuilding
In this intensely funny Love Comedy, an Oni (Ogre) named Morihito enjoys his laid-back ‘normal’ life, until a trainee witch named Nico falls into his life ready to turn everything upside down. In the world of Witch Watch, familiars have taken a human-like shape and so has been for centuries, thus, certain clans (like Morihito’s family) are bound to a family of witches forever.
It has a particularly naiff style but a solid worldbuilding with an intense sub-plot that will ensure that fans never get bored. With Nico being powerful but clumsy, and Morihito being dead serious on maintaining normality (despite being the absolute opposite to normal), laughs are guaranteed. Its release date is set for April 6, 2025.
