As you journey through the Hotland area in the game Undertale, you will eventually come across Dr. Alphys’ lab. It is here that Mettaton, a renowned monster supercomputer and celebrity, makes his debut. This quirky, electronic entertainer has set his sights on capturing the human character’s soul, and he is relentless in his pursuit.

In your interaction with Mettaton, you’ll face several instances, some of which may require fighting and others involve intricate traps. There’s even a trivia quiz! Given his complex nature as a boss, this guide aims to help navigate through Mettaton and his flamboyant antics.

How To Answer Mettaton’s Quiz In Undertale

The player’s first meeting with Mettaton will be different depending on whether they’re embarking upon a pacifist run or a genocide run. There will be far more wacky scenarios during the pacifist run, while genocide runs will skip a lot of the gags in favor of violence.

During a pacifist or neutral run, the player will first run into Mettaton after reaching Dr. Alphys lab in Hotland. After a brief conversation with the scientist, this charismatic robot will make a dramatic entrance by bursting through the wall. From there, a battle with Mettaton will commence, although it will be less of a battle and more of a quiz show. During this quiz, Alphys will be present, which will turn out to be a big help when answering Mettaton’s questions.

As a fan, let me help you out! In this game, I’ll be asked to answer multiple-choice questions with four options. Some will be simple, but others might be challenging, like a complex math problem involving trains. These tough ones come with a timer of only 30 seconds. If I get an answer wrong, Mettaton will blast me with a laser that cuts my health in half! Let’s get started and see how well I can do!

While some questions are tough, players shouldn’t have difficulty answering them all correctly thanks to Dr. Alphys. After Mettaton asks the player a question, look at Dr. Alphys’ hands. They’ll often be in the shape of the letter corresponding with the right answer unless it’s a trick question. Choose that letter, and you’ll continue on with the quiz. It’ll end when Mettaton asks an embarrassing question about Dr. Alphys. Afterward, he’ll leave, and the player can continue on through Hotland.

How To Survive Mettaton’s Other Encounters

As the player progresses through Hotland, there will be other bizarre encounters with Mettaton. The first will be a cooking show titled “Cooking With A Killer Robot.” Mettaton will ask the player to retrieve each of the ingredients for a recipe behind him on the counter. After doing so, he’ll reveal that the final ingredient is a human soul before advancing on the player with a chainsaw. Dr. Alphys will interfere and get Mettaton to change the recipe to include a human soul substitute, which will lead to a minigame where the player will pilot a jetpack to reach a can of human soul substitute. Mettaton will throw eggs, sugar, and milk, so dodge those obstacles to reach the top.

The next encounter will be after a battle with a pair of royal guards. The player will now be on an edition of MTT News where Mettaton will instruct them to find something interesting to report on. There will be various items in the area, such as a basketball, a glass of water, a copy of Mettaton’s movie script, among other items. It doesn’t matter which item is chosen as Mettaton will reveal that all of them are actually bombs. He’ll then tell the player that they need to defuse all the bombs in 120 seconds or else a larger bomb will blow up.

There are six bombs in this room that need to be defused. To do so, the player needs to run into the items moving around the area to initiate a battle. As the bomb moves from side to side, the player needs to go into the Act section, and choose Defuse Bomb just as the item is within the green defusing zone. Do this for all six bombs, and no one will be blown up.

The third encounter with Mettaton occurs shortly after fighting Muffet The Spider. The player will become an unwitting actor in Mettaton’s play, which is a parody of Final Fantasy VI’s opera. Following the performance, the player will be dropped into a dungeon and forced to complete a complicated floor tile puzzle in less than 30 seconds or be incinerated by walls of fire. This is the same floor tile puzzle that Papyrus attempted to trick the player with back in Snowdin. Each tile does something different, and Mettaton will refuse to repeat the rules. However, there isn’t any real danger, as Dr. Alphys will deactivate the firewalls.

Mettaton will attack the player, which will start a battle. Dr. Alphys will tell the player to press the yellow button on their phone, which can be done by going into the Act menu and choosing Yellow. This will turn the heart cursor upside down and yellow. It’ll now be able to fire bullets at Mettaton like a spaceship in a shmup game. Fire some shots into Mettaton, and he’ll run off.

How To Defeat Mettaton EX In Undertale

At the end of The Core region of the game, Mettaton will reveal that every previous encounter with him so far has been a ruse set up by Dr. Alphys. He’ll announce that he’s planning on stealing the human’s soul to escape the underground, and the final battle with him will begin.

The player’s heart cursor will still resemble a yellow ship that can fire bullets, although they won’t damage Mettaton in his current form. This fight will essentially turn into a shmup with Mettaton dropping objects from the top of the screen onto the player. Eventually, Dr. Alphys will tell the player that Mettaton has a switch on his back that makes him vulnerable to bullets. Go into the Act section, and select the Turn option. This will trick Mettaton into turning around, allowing the switch to be pressed. This will transform him into his humanoid form: Mettaton EX. The battle will now become more difficult with attacks that are tougher to dodge.

Here’s every attack Mettaton EX will throw at the player:

Long legs lower onto the player Shooting the legs turns them yellow and makes them sway back and forth. Do this to move the legs and dodge them.
Small versions of Mettaton float down on umbrellas and throw hearts Shoot them out of the sky.
Bombs with + sign Shooting them causes a plus-shaped explosion. Avoid them by moving out of the way. If they’re shot, the player can quickly move to the side to avoid the explosion. This attack will also be combined with blocks.
Arms with a yellow square on them Shoot the yellow square to make the arm retract.
Disco ball that sends laser beams at the player The beams will be either white or blue. By shooting the disco ball, the color of the beams will change. Stay under the ball and shoot it to turn the beams blue. Then stay still to avoid damage.
Rewind attack that sends down squares and bombs, then rewinds them to send them upwards Shoot out the squares and bombs, then remember which ones were shot and move into those gaps when everything gets rewound.
Rows of legs that pop out from either side of the screen Before these legs appear, a large flashing rectangle with an exclamation point will appear. When it does, move to the opposite side.
Mettaton’s heart leaves the body and fires various projectiles Avoid the projectiles and shoot the heart until it goes back into Mettaton’s body.

Defeating Mettaton EX requires the player to do two things: blow off Mettaton’s limbs and get the ratings of his show to over 10,000 viewers. The first part is done by shooting his heart every time it leaves his body. It’ll throw lightning-shaped projectiles combined with other attacks. Continue to shoot the heart until Mettaton’s arms and legs are destroyed.

During the given phase of the game, there are three new choices added to the Act menu aside from the usual Check command. The player can choose to Pose, which will significantly raise the ratings if injured; Heel Turn, which will boost ratings when hurt; and Boast, which will cause the ratings to rise during Mettaton’s attack phase (as long as no damage is sustained). Other actions like consuming popular foods will also impact the ratings. The quickest way to raise ratings is to learn the timing of the attacks and then Boast. As long as there’s no harm taken, ratings will increase much faster this way compared to the other options.

When both conditions are fulfilled, Mettaton fans will start making phone calls to plead with Mettaton not to leave the underground. In response, Mettaton’s heart will change and the battle will come to an end peacefully.

How To Beat Mettaton Neo (Genocide Route)

If the player is attempting a Genocide Route run, the encounter with Mettaton will be quite different. Upon reaching Dr. Alphys’ lab in Hotland, Mettaton will be waiting for the player. He’ll tell them that Dr. Alphys has left to evacuate the other monsters from the area before leaving. All of the silly encounters from before, such as the cooking show or news report, won’t happen, and those areas will be empty when the player arrives.

When the player reaches the end of The Core and faces Mettaton, he’ll turn into his Mettaton NEO form. However, seeing how the player is an incredibly powerful murder machine by this point, it will only take one attack to kill Mettaton NEO.
