God Of War TV Showrunner Reveals He Couldn’t Connect With The Games

Summary

  • Amazon ordered two seasons of the God of War TV show despite the showrunner admitting he hasn’t played the games.
  • The show’s start in Greek or Norse mythology is unknown, and there are no actors cast yet.
  • The upcoming free game update for God of War Ragnarok celebrates the franchise’s 20th anniversary.

If you weren’t aware, I’m thrilled to share that Amazon is developing a TV series based on the God of War video game franchise! Although we haven’t caught a glimpse of a teaser trailer yet, they’ve got enough faith in it to commission several seasons ahead already.

It’s quite surprising that the lead of the God of War series hasn’t experienced any of its video games yet.

God of War TV Show Writer Hasn’t Played A Lot Of Video Games

Appearing in The Sackhoff Show with actress Katee Sackhoff (via GamesRadar), acclaimed TV writer and producer Ronald D. Moore, who’s overseeing the God of War show, casually mentioned how Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the show, and that he can’t play the games at all.

Moore, who’s credited for TV shows such as Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek Generations and more, said, “Right now I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they asked me to come in, I’m literally in the writers room and that’s my new thing”

However, connecting to the game isn’t as easy as playing the game and finishing it, as Moore hasn’t played video games since the ’80s back in arcades. While Moore did try out the game, he found it a little bit too hard and the learning curve a bit too steep. “The controllers now… Press R1, which one’s R1, oh I’m dead! I can’t quite get a hold of that,” Moore added.

Of course, being good at the games or even finishing it isn’t even a requirement, as Moore can just watch the entire story on video platforms and still get the entire theme of it — at least I hope that works that way.

So far, it is unknown whether the Amazon God of War show will start with the Greek series or jump ahead to Norse mythology. There are also no actors cast for it yet, though we’re hoping that changes very soon. The show was greenlit in 2022 and is a collaboration between Amazon, Sony, and PlayStation Productions.

As for the games, we don’t know whether Santa Monica Studiio is continuing Norse Kratos’ tale, putting Kratos in a new mythology, or if the franchise is on hiatus for now. What we do know is that a free game update set to be released later this week will bring new items to God of War Ragnarok as part of the franchise’s 20th Anniversary on March 20.
