Summary

  • Rise of the Ronin PC players are facing vanishing save file issues on Steam.

  • The PC port also struggles with performance and optimization problems.

PC gamers are banding together to report ongoing issues tarnishing Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo’s Rise of the Ronin release on Steam, mainly vanishing save files that are effectively binning players’ hard-earned progress. Rise of the Ronin’s PC port launched on March 11, 2025, which previously promised support for ultra-wide aspect ratios, 8K resolution, and 120 FPS, alongside frame generation, ray tracing, and more.

Following the Blade Twins around Japan’s mid-19th-century Edo period, the action RPG was first released in 2024 and marks the third project between Sony and Koei Tecmo following the Nioh series. Rise of the Ronin confidently joins the best open-world samurai games on the market, sharpening katanas alongside Like a Dragon: Ishin!, Way of the Samurai 4, and Sucker Punch Productions’ breathtaking 2020 masterpiece Ghost of Tsushima.

Highlighted within the game’s Steam discussions, Rise of the Ronin players reported the widespread disappearance of save files, with some claiming they lost around 10–15 hours of progress. Other Steam users received an error code upon closing the game and were subsequently alarmed to see their save files had disappeared. What sounded like a glitch related to Steam cloud saves was soon thwarted when more users noticed erased manual saves. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only issue plaguing the way of the samurai. Rise of the Ronin’s PC port also grappled with performance and optimization issues, which sadly added to Team Ninja’s pattern of under-par PC releases.

Koei Tecmo responded to concerns from the player base, confirming the devs were investigating the save issues. In the interim, the team advised players to change the folder set for file sharing, retrieve and use backup save data, and make sure the Steam cloud was activated. Gamers previously feared Rise of the Ronin’s PC release was poorly timed for March 2025, clashing with the launch of heavyweight Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, being overshadowed by Ubisoft’s flagship IP is the least of Team Ninja’s current problems.

Rise of the Ronin received a substantial patch last year on PlayStation 5 (the game’s sole platform before its PC release), bringing a wealth of new content, bug fixes, and gameplay adjustments. Five new Ally Missions were added in the update, alongside level syncing for Testament of the Soul, and two additional set bonuses for the Midnight difficulty. Furthermore, players braving Midnight could now select Public Order and reset enemy camps.
