Throughout the duration of the Naruto series, Kakashi Hatake has consistently been adored by fans due to his distinctive Sharingan abilities. Nicknamed the Copy Ninja, Kakashi was celebrated for his vast arsenal of a thousand copied techniques and numerous other accomplishments made possible through the Sharingan. Given that the Sharingan plays such a crucial role in defining Kakashi’s character, it came as an unexpected twist when author Masashi Kishimoto chose to remove Kakashi from possessing his precious eye technique by the end of Naruto.
After losing a significant power source, fans questioned where Kakashi would go next to compensate for the loss of his Sharingan. Remarkably, Kakashi managed to modify his fighting style by integrating novel tactics into his repertoire and leveraging his past combat wisdom. In numerous instances throughout the Boruto series, Kakashi has been observed to be stronger than ever before, even without the Sharingan. This remarkable strength can be attributed to Kakashi’s strategic acumen, genius intellect, and a few other modifications in his tactical approach.
How Did Kakashi Lose His Sharingan?
The Fourth Great Ninja War Was a Turning Point For Kakashi’s Character
Episode | Naruto Shippuden, Episode 424, “To Rise Up” |
Air Date | August 13, 2015 |
In the grand finale of Naruto, my eyes bore witness to a significant shift in Kakashi’s arsenal. His Sharingan, a defining feature throughout his characterization, was taken away in the final moments. Initially, Madara swiftly plucked out one of his Sharingans, using it to navigate the Kamui Dimension. Yet, that wasn’t the end of Kakashi’s Sharingan story. In his dying breaths, Obito bestowed upon Kakashi a Double Mangekyou Sharingan, transferring the last remnants of his chakra before his demise. A more precise way to put it would be to say that Obito granted Kakashi an eye from beyond the veil of life.
Once Obito’s Chakra was completely depleted, the Sharingan disappeared from Kakashi’s eyes, leaving him permanently devoid of the Dojutsu. This pivotal moment significantly shaped Kakashi’s character, as he lost his ultimate tactic and greatest strength. Without the Sharingan, Kakashi cannot perform Raikiri, because the technique induces tunnel vision and unpredictability – facets that the Sharingan previously managed.
It’s important to mention that Kakashi giving up his Sharingan has great symbolic significance within the storyline. Since Obito gave him the Sharingan, it was fitting for it to vanish along with Obito. This also signifies Kakashi’s final separation from his friend Obito, as the last remnant of him disappeared upon his death. This significant moment prompted Kakashi to fundamentally change his fighting style, as he could no longer depend on the Sharingan’s power in combat.
Reliance On Long-Range Attacks
Kakashi Adapted to a Long-Range Fighting Style to Counter the Loss Of His Sharingan
Following the loss of his Sharingan, Kakashi Hatake had to adjust his fighting methods to compensate for the absence of his most potent ability. Given that he predominantly employed close combat through his Raikiri, he could no longer rely on this style anymore due to the Raikiri’s dependence on the Sharingan’s powers. With the Sharingan now out of reach, Kakashi was compelled to adopt a fighting strategy more suited for medium to long-range engagements. This mainly entailed utilizing jutsu and techniques that allowed him to attack enemies from greater distances.
Although Kakashi didn’t have a specific jutsu designed for this task, he innovated the Purple Lightning technique, an adaptation of Raikiri, to compensate for the absence of his Sharingan. The Purple Lightning allows Kakashi to attack enemies from afar with exceptional precision without needing the tracking capabilities of the Sharingan. Additionally, Kakashi’s Purple Electricity technique can serve a dual purpose: at close range, he can generate Purple Electricity in his arms and assault opponents quickly. In the Boruto series, Kakashi demonstrated this technique by creating Purple Lightning in his hands to attack Koji Koshin’s Shadow Clone.
In essence, Purple Lightning appears to be an updated version or rebrand of the Raikiri, with enhanced capabilities in long-range attack efficiency. The methodology behind both techniques is quite similar; Kakashi even employs the jutsu much like the Chidori Current, generating purple electric energy all over his body. Additionally, Purple Lightning can be infused into weapons such as katanas, making it versatile for both close and distant combat situations.
Kakashi Adopted a More Team-Centered Fighting Style
The Loss Of Kakashi’s Sharingan Forced Him to Rely More on His Allies

In the Naruto series, Kakashi’s approach in battles has typically been a solo one, leaning heavily on his personal abilities rather than relying on others. From his early fight with Zabuza to later skirmishes like those against Itachi and Pain in Shippuden, this pattern holds true. His Mangekyou Sharingan and Raikiri were crucial factors that enabled him to fight independently.
In the anime series Boruto, Kakashi Hatake is seen fighting alongside his allies more frequently compared to his solo appearances in the Naruto series. This shift might be attributed to the fact that he’s less dependent on his two strongest powers. Notably, except for his skirmish with Koji Kashin, this cooperative style of combat has been a prominent feature in Boruto. However, it’s important to note that during the Fourth Great Ninja War, he also fought as part of a team, but this was necessitated by the nature of the battle itself.
During the heat of war, my encounters against powerful adversaries stand out most vividly, like the intense one-on-one fight with Obito in the Kamui dimension. Losing my Sharingan altered my combat methods significantly. This shift isn’t just about fighting, but it mirrors my personal growth too. Now, I find myself relying more on my comrades – something that was a struggle for me back when I was a genin.
Higher Endurance and Chakra
Kakashi Is No Longer Limited By the Sharingan’s Constant Chakra Drainage

It’s often thought that Kakashi becoming Sharingan-less made him weaker than before, but this assumption is incorrect. Instead, Kakashi has actually grown stronger since then, a development likely due to his increased stamina and chakra reserves now that he no longer possesses the Sharingan. This is because Kakashi isn’t an Uchiha, meaning his body wasn’t designed to handle the high chakra demands of the Sharingan.
Furthermore, his constantly active Sharingan consumed a significant amount of his chakra, leaving him weakened after brief usage of the Dojutsu. Now that he no longer possesses the dojutsu, Kakashi has a far greater chakra reserve and increased stamina, enabling him to endure in battle for extended periods without experiencing the detrimental effects of activating his Sharingan abilities. In essence, this alteration in Kakashi’s collection of skills might have even augmented his strength, as his primary vulnerability in the Naruto series was his continuous chakra depletion and limited endurance.
