- Netflix CEO hints at a vast Stranger Things universe with potential spinoffs in the works.
- Potential spinoffs may not focus on Eleven, opening doors for new characters and storylines.
Millie Bobby Brown has portrayed numerous characters, yet her captivating performance as Eleven on Netflix’s Stranger Things is nearing its conclusion. When viewers first encountered Eleven in the initial season of Stranger Things, which premiered in 2016, she was a bewildered and displaced child who fled from the malicious Hawkins Lab. Now, having grown older and more knowledgeable, she remains as endearing and loveable as ever, preparing to engage in the battle of her lifetime.
In the future, when Stranger Things season 5 airs on the streaming platform around 2025, viewers can expect a challenging confrontation between The Party and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). However, since the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have hinted at potential spinoffs for quite some time now, fans are curious about who they might focus on and what new events could unfold. In a recent interview, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos discussed the future of this popular show.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos Mentioned The Future Of Stranger Things

According to a conversation with Variety, Ted Sarandos discussed the comeback of some of Netflix’s largest series, including Stranger Things’ fifth season, which is expected for release in 2025.
In my opinion, ‘Stranger Things’ is a vast world – you can witness this in the books that delve into the characters, in the numerous merchandise, and in the live stage show, the prequel titled ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow‘ which is currently doing exceptionally well on the West End. It will soon be making its debut on Broadway.
Given that Ted Sarandos referred to the show as “a vast cosmos,” could it be possible that multiple Stranger Things spinoffs are being planned? With talks of both animated and live-action spinoffs from the Duffer Brothers, fans can’t help but share their ideas and speculate about what’s to come. It seems likely that there might be as many as three or four upcoming Stranger Things spinoffs. Who wouldn’t want to delve deeper into Hawkins, Indiana, or perhaps discover a new location yet unexplored?
In the year 2021, during the Code Conference held in Beverly Hills, California, Sarandos hinted at possible spinoffs. As reported by Deadline, he referred to “Stranger Things” as a “franchise in development” and elaborated:
“Franchises are good, but what you want are hits.”
Due to the exceptional ratings and feedback for “Stranger Things” since its debut in 2016, it seems reasonable to assume that the series could inhabit a vast, expansive world, as suggested by Sarandos. The audience is already deeply engrossed in these characters, so they would probably welcome new character introductions as well. Occasionally, a show captures the hearts of viewers like “Stranger Things” has done, and there’s no question that it ranks among the most cherished series ever to appear on Netflix.
What Could The Stranger Things Spinoffs Be About?
Considering how successful Stranger Things has been, it’s hard to imagine that the fifth season would truly be the end. Sincethe Stranger Things world is well-crafted, entertaining, and scary, so many new stories could be told.
As reported by Variety in 2022, the Duffer Brothers shared on the podcast “Happy Sad Confused” that the Stranger Things spinoff will not revolve around Eleven. Despite Eleven being central to the plot of Stranger Things season 5 and her story possibly concluding there, fans might be disappointed since they find her a complex, intriguing, innocent yet resilient character. However, this spinoff could offer numerous other compelling tales. It may be set in Hawkins, Indiana, focusing on entirely new characters who encounter the creatures of the Upside Down several years before Will Byers and his companions did. Given the Duffer Brothers’ talent for creating intelligent, humorous, vulnerable yet strong characters, viewers would undoubtedly be captivated by these new individuals and eager to see more of them.
It’s plausible that the stage play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” might evolve into a prequel TV series on Netflix. This production brings back beloved characters like Jim Hopper (James), Joyce Maldonado, Dr. Brenner, Henry Creel, Victor Creel, and Bob Newby. It delves into the storyline that precedes “Stranger Things” Season 1, even revisiting key locations from the original series such as Hawkins National Lab. Transforming this play, which has garnered excellent reviews, into a series would be intriguing, as it offers an opportunity to explore the origin story of these characters.
