Pokemon GO Fest is Being Sneaky with Mega Mewtwo, And It’s Brilliant

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 has begun in Tokyo, and the event will soon expand to other locations. Players can participate in events in Chicago and Copenhagen, or join the global Pokémon GO Fest in July. Many Pokémon will be featured, but Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are generating the most excitement. These Mega Evolved forms are expected to be incredibly powerful in battles, and early data suggests they could become top-tier Pokémon.

Some players have pointed out that Mega Evolving Mega Mewtwo X or Y is much more expensive than Mega Evolving other Pokémon. The cost is comparable to using Eternatus, which is considered one of the strongest Dynamax Pokémon. It takes 7,500 Mega Energy to Mega Evolve Mewtwo into either form for the first time. While this seems like a large amount – especially since raids only award around 450 Mega Energy each – Niantic and Scopely have implemented a clever system that I think is quite smart.

Mega Mewtwo X and Y are not as Expensive as You Think

A key feature of the Mega Mewtwo raids during Pokémon GO Fest 2026 is that players can catch a Mewtwo that already knows its first Mega Evolution move after completing any of the Super Mega Raids. There’s also a small chance that the Mewtwo caught will have its second or third Mega Evolution move unlocked, though the exact chances of this happening are unknown.

The cost to fully Mega Evolve Mewtwo is surprisingly reasonable compared to other Pokémon in the game. While unlocking the initial Mega Evolution level requires a significant amount of energy, leveling up to levels 2 and 3 will likely be much cheaper. We estimate reaching Mega Level 4 will take around the standard 5,000 energy. The biggest hurdle for players is that initial 7,500 energy unlock, which is what’s preventing access to a top-tier Pokémon in Pokemon GO.

The new Mewtwo available during Pokémon GO Fest – whether at a live event or globally – offers a big advantage because it doesn’t require the usual large amount of energy to unlock its full potential. This encourages players to use this new Mewtwo instead of any they already have, even perfect or shiny ones. In effect, Pokémon GO players are essentially starting their Mewtwo collection over.

This is great news for Pokémon GO players, as it suggests more people will join the challenging Mewtwo X and Y raids. Niantic likely wants high participation, as these raids seem to be the most difficult yet. During a recent GO Tour event, defeating a Mega Dragonite raid required at least 12 Mega-Evolved Pokémon to break its shield. We can expect Mega Mewtwo to be even tougher, possibly needing around 15 Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Since raids currently allow a maximum of 20 players, it might be hard to complete these raids during GO Fest if fewer players are active.

You could get enough Mega Energy by completing a lot of Mega Raids, but most players will likely focus on finding Mewtwo with higher Mega Levels – level 2 or 3, or at least level 1 with a shiny appearance or a special GO Fest background. This is a clever move by Niantic to keep players engaged, which is especially important for celebrating the 10th anniversary of Pokémon GO.

Why You Should Farm Mega Mewtwo in Super Mega Raids

Initially, the high mega energy cost could have discouraged players. However, it now seems to be a major reason people are actively participating in Super Mega Raids instead of holding out for future raids that might feature Mega Mewtwo. I’m personally planning to search for shiny Mega Mewtwo X and Y with excellent stats.

Mega Mewtwo Y and X are incredibly powerful Pokémon and will be top-tier attackers in Pokémon GO raids. Mega Mewtwo Y is expected to be the strongest Psychic-type attacker available, while Mega Mewtwo X will be among the best Fighting-type attackers. Depending on the moves they learn, they can also perform well as other types of attackers.

Mega Mewtwo is a big draw for GO Fest 2026, but there’s much more to enjoy this year. The arrival of Zarude is also exciting, and will be even more relevant when its Mega Evolution is released. Throughout the weekend event, you’ll have the chance to battle and catch many of the most popular Pokémon. Plus, you can collect Pokémon with a unique, event-themed background.

If you only do one thing at GO Fest, make it the Mega Mewtwo Super Mega Raids. It’s best to try both X and Y versions, but if you have to choose, go for Mega Mewtwo Y – it’s expected to be a top-tier Pokémon you won’t want to miss. Remember to bring a Pokémon that’s already mega-evolved to the raid!
