In the universe of My Hero Academia, possessing a superpower, known as a Quirk, is essential for being a hero. Throughout the storyline, it becomes evident that most people are born with these powers. However, technology and abilities evolve to the point where they can strip or take away a person’s Quirk completely, rendering them powerless and unable to participate actively as heroes while watching their fellow heroes from the sidelines.
In the thrilling world of My Hero Academia, losing a Quirk isn’t just a setback; it’s a life-altering event that can leave a hero emotionally and physically shattered. During the heat of battle, such a loss can make one incredibly vulnerable and virtually powerless. For some characters in this series, having their Quirks suddenly taken away is a fate more dreadful than death itself. As we bid farewell to the manga, it’s essential to ponder over the characters who had to relinquish their powers, and delve into the reasons that compelled them to part with their unique abilities in the first place.
However, beware! This exploration will unveil significant spoilers for the entire My Hero Academia storyline. So, if you haven’t finished reading or watching up to the current point, I strongly advise you to proceed with caution. Let’s dive into the heartrending tales of our heroes who faced the excruciating loss of their Quirks!
This list contains spoilers!
7. Ragdoll
Ragdoll Had Her Quirk Snatched Away By The Malicious All For One
- Stolen By All For One
As an onlooker, I’ve come across a feline-themed team of champions known as the Wild, Wild Pussycats. Each member of this band possesses extraordinary abilities, or Quirks, that they employ to combat villains and aid in the education of their students. Among them is Ragdoll, a unique character whose specialty was an exceptional Search Quirk, allowing her to scrutinize every aspect of a person merely by observing them with her keen eyes. However, her extraordinary power was tragically stripped from her by All For One during the Forest Training Camp saga, causing her removal from the group.
At this stage in the narrative, All For One had scarcely made an appearance. Therefore, his sudden emergence served as a chilling hint of the menacing actions to be expected from this formidable antagonist. As for Ragdoll, she was left shattered following the event, but managed to find some renewed courage towards the end, spurred on by witnessing her comrades and fellow pussycats persist in their battle against the evil forces.
6. Hawks
Hawks Got A Little Too Close For Comfort With All For One
- Stolen By All For One
In the narrative, Hawks might be viewed as a character with a somewhat ambiguous moral compass for most parts, but during the climactic war, he transforms into an indispensable resource who is fully prepared to risk his life to vanquish All For One. Hawks’ Quirk is remarkably versatile; it enables him to employ and modify wings and feathers as per his desire, making it a power so potent that it propelled him to the second-highest Pro-Hero rank at just 20 years old.
In the heat of battle before the war officially began, Dabi had left my wings severely charred. As they were gradually healing, All For One snatched my Quirk right out from under me! During this encounter, he took great pleasure in belittling my abilities, taunting me with his words as he drained my Quirk from my near-death grip.
5. Overhaul
Shigaraki Made Sure That Overhaul Could Never Get In The League’s Way Ever Again By Destroying His Hands
- Loses Ability To Use Quirk After His Arms Are Removed
In this story, Shie Hassaikai, better known as Overhaul, seized the position of primary villain for just one chapter. However, it’s undeniable that he left a lasting impression despite his brief appearances. With a unique power allowing him to dismantle and rebuild whatever he touches, Overhaul gained notoriety, particularly for his abusive treatment of a young girl named Eri. Consequently, the heroes marked him as their top priority.
Eventually, Midoriya manages to subdue Shigaraki, but it’s Shigaraki who delivers the decisive blow, destroying Overhaul’s arms in the process. This means that Overhaul can never use his Quirk again, as he effectively becomes a regular citizen once he recovers, having no unique abilities to set him apart.
4. All Might
One For All Is Designed To Be Passed Down, And All Might Decided Midoriya Would Be The One To Carry His Torch
- Passes Quirk Down To Midoriya
In the initial episode, when Midoriya first encounters All Might, it’s evident that the Hero Pro isn’t in peak physical condition. Although his Quirk, One For All, enables him to vanquish villains effortlessly, the toll it takes on his body from constant combat necessitates a swift transfer of his power. After observing Midoriya’s bravery and heroic actions, he chooses the quirkless student as the one worthy to receive this legacy.
In essence, All Might could manage a few more battles in his heroic form, but his fierce confrontation with All For One ultimately snuffed out the last remnants of power within him. After giving up his Quirk, All Might faced challenges finding his role in society, yet he remained crucial, particularly in the lead-up to the war and even actively participated, thanks to some Support Gear.
3. Star And Stripe
America’s Top Hero Had One Final Nasty Surprise For All For One After He Steals Her Quirk
- Stolen By All For One
Star and Stripe stands out distinctly within “My Hero Academia”. Although appearing for minimal chapters and episodes, this character holds the title of America’s top hero and boasts an extraordinarily powerful Quirk – New Order. This unique ability allows her to alter the characteristics of anything she touches, making the world essentially her own creative playground.
Despite her ability to effectively utilize her power against All For One, who was temporarily in control of Shigaraki’s body, she gets too close and loses her Quirk to him. Later, she disintegrates. Star had established a rule that New Order would not harmonize with other Quirks. Consequently, when All For One absorbs it, his own Quirks clash violently within him, causing severe internal damage, serving as a final farewell gift from the underappreciated Pro-Hero.
2. Mirio
Mirio Was Shot With A Quirk-Destroying Bullet While Serving His Heroic Duty
- Removed With Quirk Destroying Bullet
In the narrative, we meet Mirio, an intelligent and spirited individual who befriends Midoriya, just before the Overhaul arc unfolds. Prior to this, Mirio has spent years perfecting his ability, Permeation, which is often considered uncontrollable due to its inherent danger. It’s surprising, then, that during the Overhaul raid, Mirio finds himself under attack by a bullet designed to destroy Quirks.
Following a rear attack that left him permanently without Permeation, Mirio presses on with his battle, wearing a resilient smile, though the anguish etched across his face is undeniable. Later, thanks to Eri’s unique power, he regains some of his Quirk, but it was deeply moving to witness its abrupt loss, after all the effort he had poured into perfecting it.
1. Midoriya
Midoriya Transfers His Immensely Powerful Quirk To Put An End To All For One
- Used To Destroy All For One
As the narrative unfolds, it becomes evident that the primary goal of the One For All power is to vanquish All For One; a power source that will perpetuate misery and torment as long as it persists. In the climactic confrontation between Midoriya and Shigaraki, Midoriya discerns the sole means to quell the turmoil is by annihilating him from within – essentially forcing One For All into Shigaraki’s being to obliterate him and all his powers internally.
In the thrill of successfully transferring my Quirk, I utilized the last flickers of energy to keep pushing, extending my journey just a bit longer. Yet again, I found myself Quirkless. Unlike many other characters in this series who might have felt fury or sadness, I was nothing but ecstatic. The reason? I had managed to save Japan, and perhaps even the world, from impending doom. It was all thanks to my selflessness and heroic act in that critical instant.
