Theuns Smit, involved in creating this new Bond, explained that deciding what to keep and what to change with such a well-known character was a difficult process.
As a huge Bond fan, one of the first things we decided when we started working on this game was that we wanted to create something totally new – a fresh origin story for a young James Bond. We weren’t interested in just retelling an old movie or following the same path everyone else had. It was really important to us to have the creative freedom to build our own story and deliver the kind of experience we wanted players to have. We wanted to put our own stamp on the Bond universe!
This new take on James Bond is forging its own path. While it would have been easy to simply recreate elements from previous movies and books, IO Interactive wanted to build a fresh, original character. They saw this as a chance for a clean start, which is why they chose to portray a younger, less seasoned Bond.
The story of 007 First Light takes place before James Bond earned his 00 agent status. He’s still proving himself and working to join that elite group, which might make him a bit more impulsive than we’re used to seeing. This setup—watching Bond learn the ropes and become a better agent—is a really interesting idea, and it allows for new possibilities with the character since he’s not yet the fully-formed Bond we know. The developers felt this earlier stage in Bond’s career gave them a lot of creative freedom, as Smit explained:
This approach allows us to present a new and developing version of James Bond. What’s especially great is how this ties into the gameplay – you really experience Bond’s growth as a player. You start with him as a rookie, fresh out of training – literally emerging from the ocean in Iceland – and see him succeed through sheer determination. As you progress, he improves his skills, and the gameplay reflects that. It’s a really engaging combination of story and gameplay, letting you join Bond on his journey, and that was a key element for us.
Bond’s Most Iconic Elements Are Honored Throughout the Story, But They May Feel a Little Different at First
James Bond stories are known for certain iconic elements – like his famous introduction, “Bond, James Bond,” and the memorable theme songs that define the film series. Fans consider these features crucial. The creators of the new game, 007 First Light, are making sure to include these beloved traditions, but with a twist: this game focuses on Bond as a rookie agent. Unlike previous Bond games which featured a seasoned, well-known agent, 007 First Light shows Bond at the beginning of his career.

We’re not avoiding them; we’re actively leaning into them, because we have a lot of respect for this long-standing and beloved franchise and want to do it justice.
Using the James Bond theme song strategically throughout the game – building its presence as players progress towards becoming 007 – is a clever way to pay tribute to the iconic tune without overdoing it. Rather than focusing on the detailed backstory that defines James Bond, the developers are relying on core elements like his adventurous spirit and a memorable villain from the older game, 007 First Light, to create a truly authentic Bond experience. The theme song represents Bond after he’s earned the 007 title, so it’s smart to use it more subtly while players are still working towards that status.
007 First Light Promises a New Era of James Bond
Fans have long argued about the best James Bond actor, with many loyal to Sean Connery or Timothy Dalton, and others appreciating the depth Daniel Craig brought to the role.
