New Open-World Survival Crafting Game on Steam is Stardew Valley Meets Valheim on Floating Islands

Survival crafting games are incredibly popular with friends, offering a compelling cycle of building and improving that keeps players hooked. Many people experience the urge to dive deeply into games like Minecraft for weeks on end. While some prefer Subnautica (and its sequel), others enjoy Rust or 7 Days to Die. Valheim is another great example of this type of game, and it’s one of the two titles that the new Steam game, Solarpunk, is most similar to. The other game it’s being compared to is Stardew Valley.

Even though Stardew Valley is still being updated and loved by its creator, some players have played it so much they’re looking for something new. Luckily, Steam has lots of similar games to choose from, though nothing is quite the same. If you enjoy the farming in Stardew Valley combined with the crafting and exploration of Valheim, Solarpunk looks like a promising game with some interesting features.

Per Solarpunk’s Steam page, the game will launch on June 8, 2026.

Solarpunk is the Result of Four Years’ Worth of Work

Developing video games is usually challenging, and many games have been delayed over the years. Solarpunk faced similar hurdles, made even tougher by being created by a small team of just two people. But after several delays, this bright, fully-featured open-world game is finally ready to launch, and it looks like it will offer a lot to do. Players will find themselves on a chain of floating islands where they can build and live out their ideal farm life. This includes constructing buildings, growing crops, raising animals, crafting tools, and exploring – all while carefully managing energy resources.

If you enjoy building and crafting in video games, Solarpunk looks like a real treat. The game features beautiful lighting that makes your creations stand out, and offers tons of decorations and materials for unique designs. Farming is also quite detailed – happy animals, like pigs finding truffles, will give you extra rewards! Growing your own fruits and vegetables is essential for survival, but you can automate the process to free up time for exploration. Clever players can even use transport drones to gather and deliver resources efficiently.

So, my machines are going to need power, and honestly, it feels a lot like those automation games like Factorio or Satisfactory. I’ll have to choose between wind and solar energy, but it’s not as simple as just picking one. Both have their downsides – the sun doesn’t shine all the time, and the wind isn’t always blowing! Thankfully, I can build batteries to store extra power when I do have a surplus, so I’m not left in the dark when the sun goes down or the wind dies. It’s all about planning ahead and managing my resources, which sounds like a fun challenge!

Imagine Valheim’s Boats, But in the Sky

I’m really excited about the travel options in Solarpunk! I loved sailing in Valheim, and even though Solarpunk has floating islands instead of a huge ocean, they’ve included a way for us to get around quickly. As a big fan of the airships in Final Fantasy, I’m especially thrilled to see those are in this game! It looks like you can use them to fly between the trees and reach new islands packed with resources. Whether you prefer playing with friends or solo, it seems like there’s going to be tons to explore and enjoy in Solarpunk.
