Gothic 1 Remake Comes With a Big Catch

Okay, so here’s the deal with the physical copy of Gothic 1 Remake. I pre-ordered it, and it turns out I can’t just pop the disc in and play! Apparently, we all need to download a pretty big day-one patch before we can actually start playing the game. It’s a bit annoying, honestly, but I’m still excited to finally get into it once it’s downloaded.

First released in 2001, Gothic is a beloved classic Western RPG known for its gritty fantasy world, engaging exploration, impactful choices, and deep character progression. Created by the German studio Piranha Bytes (which is no longer operating), the game launched in Europe in March 2001 and then in North America in October. In early 2020, THQ Nordic, a part of Embracer Group, announced a remake of Gothic, entrusting the project to Alkimia Interactive, a studio formed specifically to develop it.

Gothic Remake Physical Console Edition Has Sneaky Day-One Patch Requirement

On May 22nd, a user named DoesItPlay1 reported that the physical copy of Gothic 1 Remake isn’t working when first inserted into the console. They shared a screenshot of an error message that asks players to connect to the internet to check the game’s status. The issue appears to be with the PlayStation 5 version and happens when trying to play the game directly from the disc. According to DoesItPlay1, a large, around 5GB, day-one update is needed to make the game playable. As of late May 2026, the game’s online store pages don’t mention the need for an internet connection or a day-one patch. DoesItPlay1 believes this lack of information is misleading and has advised fans to cancel any pre-orders.

Gothic 1 Remake Won’t Have an Always-Online Requirement

The official GothicTheGame X account addressed concerns about the game’s physical copies needing a download to play. They explained that early manufacturing required this download to ensure players could access the game immediately upon release. This mandatory download is about 5GB, roughly 8% of the total game size before any updates. While a bit of an inconvenience, it only needs to be done once. THQ Nordic also confirmed the remake won’t require a constant internet connection; after downloading the initial patch, the full game can be played completely offline.

It’s common for modern video games, particularly intricate role-playing games like the upcoming Gothic 1 Remake, to receive updates on their launch day. Some game creators offer these updates as optional downloads, which is helpful for players who don’t have fast or consistent internet access, while still letting enthusiastic fans get started quickly.
