Summary
- A Switch 1-focused Nintendo Direct might happen before the Switch 2 one, which is scheduled for April 2.
- One Chinese leaker recently claimed that a Switch 1-focused Direct will happen on March 26.
- Nintendo has historically announced Direct events a day in advance.
It’s been speculated that a Nintendo Direct event centered around Switch could be happening quite soon, perhaps as late as March 2025. Whether this rumor is true or not, past trends indicate that more Switch-centric Nintendo Direct events are likely in our future, despite the imminent launch of Switch 2.
On a typical occasion, Nintendo Direct events are prearranged for the following day. However, on January 16, there was an exception to this rule as Nintendo chose to announce the upcoming Switch 2 and schedule its first-ever live stream for April 2 instead. This extended gap between the announcement and the event is speculated to be due to Nintendo’s intention of providing sufficient time for third-party publishers to unveil their Switch 2 games before disclosing more details about the device itself.
It appears that there’s growing speculation that Nintendo could host another event before the Nintendo Direct for the Switch 2, as suggested by various sources such as Andy Robinson, the Editor-in-Chief of Video Games Chronicle. This inference comes from a recent tweet by Robinson where he used the thinking face emoji in response to a post praising Nintendo for not having a Nintendo Direct for the original Switch before the Switch 2 one.
Switch 1-Focused Nintendo Direct Could Be Happening on March 26
A more straightforward statement came from Weibo user “nom nom munch,” who earlier revealed the date of the June 2024 Nintendo Direct. On March 23, this leaker stated that a Nintendo Direct centered around the Switch will take place in just three days. If this claim is valid, then it’s highly likely that the March 26 Direct will be officially announced tomorrow, March 24.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but feel a tinge of anticipation when I think about the two major first- and second-party exclusives that Nintendo’s Switch is yet to fully showcase. One of these games is none other than “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond”, a project that was first unveiled in 2017, but later underwent a reboot by Retro Studios at the start of 2019. The other one is “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, a spin-off from Game Freak that emphasizes exploration and catching pocket monsters over traditional battling. Both games are scheduled for release in 2025, but we’re still waiting for specific launch dates.
Switch 1 Nintendo Directs Could Continue Until At Least 2026
Even though the Switch is nearing its ninth year, it’s unlikely that Nintendo will discontinue it right away following the launch of Switch 2. This is especially true given its substantial user base. For at least six more years, you might still see the console featured in Nintendo Direct presentations. As an example, the last Nintendo Direct featuring 3DS games was held in September 2018, which was a year and a half after the Switch debuted. Unlike the Wii U, the Switch’s fate wasn’t sealed by commercial failure—a factor that simply doesn’t apply to the Switch.
