While not all open-world games make exploring fun, I’m certain the ones listed below will grab your attention right away.

Exploring in a great open-world game almost always pays off, whether you discover a powerful weapon, a hidden treasure spot, or a fascinating character who joins your journey. Let’s highlight some of the best examples.

10. No Man’s Sky

When No Man’s Sky first came out, it wasn’t well-received. The launch was actually quite controversial because the game didn’t include many of the features that had been promised.

Despite a difficult beginning, the game eventually became very popular and has built a dedicated fanbase over the past ten years.

The goal of No Man’s Sky is to journey across the universe and collect resources to stay alive. With over 18 quintillion planets created by the game, players will never run out of things to find. The more you explore, the more you’ll uncover, and the bigger your collection of resources will become.

I’m totally hooked on Cyberpunk 2077! The world they’ve created is just crazy – Night City is constantly caught in power struggles, with gangs and corrupt corporations running wild. You play as V, and it’s all about trying to survive and build a reputation in this messed-up, futuristic city. It really throws you into a dark and gritty dystopian world.

While exploring Night City’s gritty streets, hidden corporate areas, and abandoned outskirts, you’ll discover plenty of Eddies (money), powerful weapons, and challenging enemies if you take your time. Essentially, Cyberpunk 2077 is a fantastic open-world game to enjoy while we wait for the release of GTA 6.

8. Outer Wilds

There’s Always Something Special Around The Corner

Outer Wilds is a great illustration of how a familiar idea can still be brilliant and unique. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it’s still a really enjoyable game.

It’s a blast to travel across space and search for valuable resources on planets like the Quantum Moon. The more you explore, the better your rewards will become over time, just as you’d expect!

7. Subnautica

Materials, Wreckages, And Dangerous Creatures

I was immediately captivated when I started playing Subnautica. The game gave me a wonderful sense of freedom as I explored and swam around the alien planet 4546B. It was often a bit scary – I have a fear of the ocean, so that probably contributed – but overall, it was a really fun experience.

Similar to other survival games, Subnautica involves exploring a planet to find shipwrecks and gather materials for crafting. As you do, you’ll learn about the unique plants and creatures of the planet 4546B. Being stranded on a huge ocean world wouldn’t be enjoyable in reality, but Subnautica offers a fun way to experience that feeling.

6. Fallout 4

Scavenging For Resources Is Key In The Boston Commonwealth

The Fallout series has a long history, but Fallout 4 really launched it into the mainstream. Set in the Boston area in the year 2287, Fallout 4 drops you into a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world where simply staying alive is a challenge.

Okay, so if you want to survive in the wasteland, you’re going to have a tough time! You’ll be facing off against some seriously nasty creatures and raiders, and radiation is everywhere. You’ll need to find ways to protect yourself – RadAway is a lifesaver, but honestly, keeping an eye out for anything useful – even a random encounter or something weird like Radroach meat – can make all the difference. And don’t underestimate bottlecaps; they can help you get what you need to stay alive! Basically, you’ve gotta be prepared for anything if you want to make it another day in Fallout 4.

I didn’t know anything about The Witcher before I bought the game in 2015. But after playing for just a few hours, I quickly became a huge fan of the world and story!

In The Witcher 3, you follow Geralt of Rivia as he searches for his adopted daughter, Ciri. The game features a vast world to discover, filled with dangerous monsters to fight and many quests to complete.

As you delve deeper into the game world, you’ll uncover rich stories about The Continent, its history, and the complex relationships between its people. Exploration is often rewarded with valuable items, like Aerondight, a powerful silver sword you can earn by completing the “Paths of Destiny” quest.

4. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

The North Of Tamriel Holds Many Ancient Secrets

A great way to judge if a game is truly exceptional is to look at how well it holds up over time. Skyrim is a prime example – it’s become a landmark title, having sold over 60 million copies worldwide and remaining incredibly popular even 15 years after its initial release.
