Summary
- Final Fantasy 14’s servers experienced frequent DDoS attacks starting around 7:00 AM Eastern on March 25.
- The attacks started after Patch 7.2, Seekers of Eternity, went live.
- Lag and server disconnections may be experienced by players during a DDoS attack.
The launch of Patch 7.2 for Final Fantasy 14, titled Seekers of Eternity, was disrupted by distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assaults on its servers, which began shortly after it went back online following maintenance. These DDoS attacks aimed at the Final Fantasy 14 servers were focused on North American and European data centers and had not been resolved as of the time this was written.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about the next phase in my adventure with Final Fantasy 14‘s Seekers of Eternity update – the continuation of the Dawntrail expansion. This exciting journey is unfolding in multiple instalments across several weeks. The March 25th patch demanded a 10GB download on my PC client and brought fresh main story quests, along with the next level of the Arcadion raid series. In addition to this, Patch 7.2 offered substantial updates for jobs like Black Mage and Pictomancer, while giving slight tweaks to the AoE spells and abilities of other combat jobs such as Paladin, Machinist, Dancer, and Warrior.
Immediately following the day-long maintenance for Final Fantasy 14, certain game servers were hit by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, as confirmed by a post on Lodestone from Square Enix. The DDoS attack commenced around 6:50 AM Eastern Time, about three hours after the deployment of Patch 7.2. Players on servers such as Aether and Chaos in North America and Europe noticed occasional lag and disconnections. A DDoS attack involves flooding a server with excessive amounts of data, overwhelming it and causing problems. This can be likened to a heavily congested highway where traffic slows down the flow. In the case of online games like Final Fantasy 14, a DDoS attack can make certain areas unplayable until the issue is resolved. Players may encounter occasional difficulties as Square Enix works on rectifying the situation.
Final Fantasy 14 Servers Assailed By DDoS Attacks
A DDoS attack on a server can’t be entirely eliminated, but skilled technicians can minimize the harm. For instance, recent difficulties with the servers in Final Fantasy 14 aren’t unique in the MMORPG realm; similar issues were encountered by World of Warcraft’s Classic Hardcore servers during March. The DDoS attack forced Blizzard to revert some of the affected characters that perished as a consequence.
As I write this, Square Enix hasn’t provided any new information regarding the DDoS attacks. Previously, the servers for Final Fantasy 14 experienced a downtime in January. It remains unclear what measures the developers will implement to address the issue moving forward.
