Initially, League of Legends was a game modeled after the popular MOBA genre, known as DotA, but it rapidly transformed into a significant cultural influence. Launched by Riot Games in 2009,
Initially, the phenomenal success of League led Riot Games to be stretched too thin in terms of time and resources for creating a new game. But, over the past five years or so, the studio based in Los Angeles has broadened its game development activities into various independent projects. The first game that Riot launched following the debut of League of Legends was 2019’s Teamfight Tactics, an auto-battler within the LoL universe. Afterward, they developed games across different genres such as the PvP FPS Valorant and the card battler Legends of Runeterra. Currently, Riot is focusing on extending the League of Legends franchise with several new spin-offs.
All Upcoming League of Legends Spin-Off Games
2XKO
Among the various spin-offs of League of Legends that are being developed, Riot Games has disclosed the most details about a game called 2XKO. Contrary to its name, 2XKO is in fact a free-to-play fighting game based on the universe of League of Legends. Unlike games like Street Fighter or Tekken, this one features a tag team combat system. Players can choose two characters to play, rather than just one, and they can switch between them during a fight. Expected to release later this year, 2XKO will mark a first for Riot as it will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S alongside PC from the very beginning.
LoL eSports Manager
Beyond creating a 2v2 combat game, Riot Games is also working on a new venture titled “League of Legends eSports Manager“. First revealed during the League of Legends‘ 10th anniversary event in 2019, this game is a management simulation that challenges players to oversee an eSports team within the League of Legends universe. The game is specifically designed for iOS and Android devices, featuring prominent gacha-style mechanics. A beta version of “League of Legends eSports Manager” was technically launched in China as early as 2022; however, details about its potential western release are scarce or non-existent.
Untitled League of Legends MMORPG
For several years now, Riot Games has been developing an MMORPG set in the universe of Runeterra, although it doesn’t yet have an official title. Despite being in continuous development, it hasn’t reached completion just yet. In early 2024, some employees at Riot announced that production on the MMO was restarted because they felt it wasn’t unique enough compared to similar games currently available. However, a high-ranking executive from the company later confirmed during the Worlds 2024 Grand Final that the League of Legends MMO is heading in a promising direction. Although we won’t be seeing its release anytime soon, it appears its development is finally making progress in the right direction.
