However, the producers were so impressed with Reedus that they crafted a new role specifically for him.

Imagining “The Walking Dead” without Daryl Dixon is unthinkable for many fans, but in an alternate reality, he could have never been a part of it. What If Norman Reedus Had Played Merle Dixon Instead?

If Andrew Lincoln had taken on the role of Merle instead of Michael Rooker, The Walking Dead’s overall feel would have been distinctively different. Rooker brought an intense, unstable, and at times repugnant energy to his portrayal of Merle. While it’s possible that Lincoln could have given a captivating performance, the character of Merle was seemingly intended to serve more as an antagonist than a long-term survivor. Had Lincoln played Merle, he might not have lasted beyond the early seasons, missing out on the chance for the show to delve into the intricate brotherly bond that eventually became a key aspect of the series.

In “This Sorrowful Life” (Season 3, Episode 15), Merle, portrayed by Rooker, was a ticking time bomb – he was dangerous and unpredictable until his last moments. If Reedus had played Merle, the writers might have made him less volatile, which could have diminished the character’s impact as a counterpoint to Rick (Andrew Lincoln). By introducing Daryl instead, it allowed for a complex portrayal of sibling contrast – Merle symbolized the worst aspects of their upbringing, while Daryl had an opportunity to rise above it.

What If Norman Reedus Had Never Been Cast In TWD at All?

Picture instead, The Walking Dead with Rooker playing Merle but without Daryl Dixon. No more crossbow-bearing hero, no one to rely on for tracking skills or emotional support for Carol (Melissa McBride). In the absence of Daryl, the group would have been significantly weaker, as they heavily depended on his survivalist abilities in tracking and combat, often relying on him for rescue missions and strategic planning.

The influence of Daryl, portrayed by Norman Reedus, significantly shaped Carol’s journey in the series. His presence offered her the support and confidence needed for her transformation into one of the show’s most resilient characters. Without Daryl, it’s plausible that Carol may not have grown into this role. Moreover, the absence of Daryl would have left a significant gap in the leadership dynamics, potentially burdening other characters like Steven Yeun’s Glenn or IronE Singleton’s T-Dog with additional responsibilities.

In the end, Daryl significantly altered the plotline of “The Walking Dead” in ways that were unforeseen by all. Although some elements from the comics are favored by fans, it’s hard to deny that incorporating Daryl into the story was a brilliant move. His presence added more instances of thoughtful reflection, formed unlikely friendships, and increased the amount of archery scenes. It’s fortunate that Reedus landed the audition, took the risk despite unfavorable odds, and Darabont recognized his potential to contribute positively to the series.

The Daryl Dixon Fans Can’t Help But Know and Love

In essence, it appears that the audience enjoyed the perfect blend – Michael Rooker’s indelible portrayal of Merle alongside Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, the skilled crossbow user. Even with a change in showrunners after the first season, the vision for Daryl’s character stayed consistent, enabling him to grow into an emblematic figure of “The Walking Dead,” if not one of the most cherished characters among fans.

Despite the original series of “The Walking Dead” wrapping up, Norman Reedus’ spinoff titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” continues to thrive. In fact, Season 2 brought back Carol, and we can anticipate the premiere of Season 3 in the Fall of 2025.
