As a gamer, I’ve found myself utterly enchanted by the unique charm of Undertale, a game that may not have had the grandiose budget or massive fanbase associated with AAA titles, but it certainly doesn’t lack in delivering an exceptional RPG adventure experience. In my opinion, Undertale stands tall among the best 16-bit tactical RPGs, offering a strategic depth that keeps me coming back for more.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate the creativity and passion that goes into fan-made games and mods. They don’t just extend existing stories; they offer fresh journeys within familiar universes. For instance, the game Undertale has thrived due to its dedicated community, which has spawned numerous spin-offs from skilled developers. Here are some of my favorite top Undertale fan games.
6. Dusttale
Heavily Focused On Sans And His Quest For Revenge
- Platform(s): Windows
- Released: February 10, 2016
- Developer(s): Evan Streblow
- Genre(s): RPG, Adventure
- Sans seeks to kill the human
- Based on a written story
In the game Dusttale, Sans is fixated on defeating LV, with the ultimate goal being to slay the protagonist. To get to LV 19, he eliminates various monsters along the way. This behavior stems from his recollection of alternate timelines where a human character has a history of wiping out everyone.
In the game titled “Dusttale“, Sans retains memories of resets and forgoes the traditional red scarf seen in “Undertale“. Despite these differences, the overall look and feel of “Dusttale” is remarkably similar to its predecessor, providing players with a comfortingly familiar gaming experience while offering a fresh narrative twist. The game was born from a written story by Ask-DustTale and has been brought to life by developer Evan Streblow, aiming to enrich the “Undertale ” universe for fans by offering an engaging spin-off experience.
5. Underfell: One Hell Of A Show
An Interesting Adventure With Black And Red Undertones

- Platform(s): Windows
- Released: December 11, 2023
- Developer(s): loganvcairns
- Genre(s): RPG, Adventure
In an unexpected twist, the game titled “Underfell: One Hell of a Show” stands out, being a fan-made version of a fan-made game, originally known as “Undertale“. Despite the layers of derivation, one might assume a less impressive debut. However, contrary to expectations, “Underfell: One Hell of a Show” delivers an engaging player experience, filled with numerous battles.
The design is distinctly unique, with its predominant black and red tones creating an eerie, almost hellish aesthetic, which sets it apart from the vibrant color palette of Understory. Originally developed by Underfella, Underfell has been co-created by Daksha, who was responsible for designing the sprites and art in Underfell: One Hell of a Show. While it may not possess as many elements as Undertale, like the most sinister choices to be made, it’s still an enjoyable play that warrants a place on this list due to its entertainment value.
4. Outertale: Project Spacetime
An Interesting Deep Space Take On Undertale
- Platform(s): Mac, Windows, Linux, Android
- Released: August 9th, 2024
- Developer(s): spacey_432
- Genre(s): RPG, Adventure
- Deep space theme
- Neutral, Genocide, and Pacifist routes are available
Outertale is likely one of the most intriguing fan-made games inspired by Undertale, given its shift in setting from the Underground to a space environment. Additionally, all characters are dressed in star-themed costumes, their abilities and music themes revolve around stars as well.
To put it simply, although Outertale shares many similarities with Undertale’s official canon, there’s one key difference: instead of being banished to the Underground after losing the war, the monsters were sent into space. The Pacifist, Neutral, and Genocide routes remain in the game, and each character retains a personality similar to their original counterparts. Outertale was inspired by a comic published by Mimi Pippinski on November 14, 2015. Despite having fewer neutral endings than Undertale, Outertale offers an enjoyable gaming experience that fans of the original will appreciate due to its engaging mechanics.
3. Understory
A More Detailed And Colorful Take On Undertale
- Platform(s): Windows
- Developer(s): PurpleTraveller Team
- Genre(s): RPG, Adventure
As a dedicated fan, I find the game Understory utterly captivating! Unlike other spin-offs, it doesn’t alter the original Undertale’s setting but instead expands its narrative. Stepping into the shoes of the protagonist, Nick, I’m eager to tackle numerous challenges while traversing this meticulously crafted world, brought to life by the skilled hands at PurpleTraveller Team.
In essence, the layout of the game titled “Understory” preserves certain aspects from the initial version of “Undertale“. Yet, it also introduces some changes, such as a brighter color scheme and potentially more refined characters for players to enjoy during their gaming experience. Despite not resembling the games within the “Pokémon” series visually, there are characteristics that may lead players to believe they’re navigating through a town in the Hoenn region. It’s undeniable that the original “Undertale” has made a significant impact with its poignant quotes, an impact that may be challenging for fangames to replicate due to the unique status it held during its time. Nevertheless, “Understory” is still a commendable title that any fan of this universe should consider trying.
2. Pokétale
A Pokémon Inspired Adventure
- Platform(s): Windows
- Released: September 13, 2024
- Developer(s): GammaRay1
- Genre(s): RPG, Adventure
- Designed very similarly to the early-day Pokémon games
- Many locations are based on the original Undertale
The origins of Pokétale are intriguing and bear some resemblance to what players encountered in Undertale. It revolves around a conflict between humans and the race of monsters, where humans eventually prevailed and monsters were sealed underground using magic. Known alternatively as Trainertale, this game offers players a rich experience and a host of innovative ideas to explore.
It’s hard not to notice that the game Pokétale appears to draw influence from the beloved Pokémon series. This is evident in the design of its characters, the exploration mechanics, combat system, and even the atmosphere – it’s almost as if you’re playing an older title from the Game Boy or Nintendo DS era. Interestingly enough, some of the game’s locations mirror those found in the original Undertale, such as Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and New Home. For fans of Undertale, Pokétale is certainly a must-play game.
1. Undertale Yellow
Arguably, The Best Undertale Fangame Out There
- Platform(s): Windows
- Released: December 9, 2023
- Developer(s): Team Undertale Yellow
- Genre(s): RPG, Adventure
- New quality-of-life elements
- Probably the best Undertale fangame ever released
Yellow from Undertale, without question, stands out as the top spin-off game from the original Undertale. It’s set in a prequel and tells the story of a human child named Clover who embarks on a journey towards the surface after events transpired that led them to the Underground. The mechanics are reminiscent of those found in the original game, but
As a devoted fan of Undertale, diving into Undertale Yellow feels like stepping into an enhanced version of my beloved game. It boasts numerous user-friendly upgrades, some of which are even seen in its spiritual sequel, Deltarune. Despite the original Undertale retaining its throne, it’s clear that Undertale Yellow brings a wealth of exciting new elements for players who have been captivated by the original since its release.
