As an enthusiastic fan of the One Piece series, I can’t help but marvel at how each island exploration reveals new insights for the entire crew. However, there are certain story arcs that hold a special significance for our beloved Straw Hat pirates on a personal level. Let’s delve deeper into these pivotal moments in the One Piece narrative to understand why they left such an indelible mark on our cherished characters.

1. Nami – Arlong Park

Initially, Nami didn’t have a warm affection towards Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji, but over time she grew very close to them. Interestingly, at the beginning, she only wanted to travel with them so she could eventually swipe their treasure and hand it over to the ruthless Fishman named Arlong, who was ruling her village tyrannically. In return, she hoped he would free her village from his oppressive rule.

When Arlong breaks his word, Nami is deeply upset, as gruesome recollections of her mother’s murder flood her mind. She questions what steps she can take to safeguard her village. However, upon seeing Luffy and the others fight tirelessly against Arlong, even after he had betrayed them, it was then that she truly believed in her new companions, who have stood by her since that critical day at Arlong Park.

2. Nico Robin – Enies Lobby

After Marines destroyed Ohara island due to suspicions about the locals uncovering secrets related to Poneglyphs, Nico Robin – the solitary survivor – was branded as the “Devil Child” by society. Since she had spent a significant portion of her life alone, Robin embraced this nickname as a means of survival, eventually joining forces with the notorious Shichibukai named Crocodile. However, it wasn’t until the Enies Lobby arc that Robin openly expressed her true sentiments, confessing that she yearned to continue living and experiencing life with her crew, despite others’ beliefs to the contrary.

In the narrative, Robin seldom displays emotions, making her seem emotionally reserved. However, Enies Lobby offers a precious glimpse into the woman hiding beneath this stoic facade. Additionally, it was during this arc that Robin decided that joining their crew was the correct choice, as until then she had been cautious about their motives. But upon their arrival to challenge the World Government in order to save her, her perception shifted completely.

3. Franky – Water 7

From Antagonist To Lovable Crew Member, Franky Grows A Lot in His Introductory Arc

Initially, when Franky, the shipwright of the Straw Hat crew, appears in Water 7, he is portrayed as an adversary, primarily obsessed with enhancing his self-image and reputation within his group. In this current storyline, Franky is the sole crew member who’s recently joined, yet he brings along the Thousand Sunny, his self-built ship, enabling him to finally set sail and explore the world as per his long-cherished dream. Franky has previously shown remarkable skills in other storylines, like his Mr. Pink Fight in Dressrosa, but it was during Water 7 where he truly came into the limelight.

4. Tony Tony Chopper – Drum Island

Leaving Drum Island and Kureha behind to fully embrace the life of a pirate was not an effortless decision, but it ultimately turns out to be the most significant and meaningful choice Chopper ever makes.

5. Brook – Whole Cake Island

Not only did Brook break Mother Caramel’s portrait, but this action provided Luffy and Bege an opportunity to finally defeat Big Mom permanently, despite the attempt ultimately failing. While Brook is often employed in storylines as comic relief, it was during Whole Cake that he chose to make a significant stand, demonstrating just how deeply he values his fellow crew members who granted him another chance at life.

6. Jinbei – Marineford War

Initially, Usopp appears to be just a bumbling jester in the early arcs of the series. However, it isn’t long before you realize there’s a depth to him, as deep-seated emotions simmer beneath his playful exterior. When they reach Water 7 and the danger escalates drastically with their ship, Merry, being on the brink of destruction, Usopp musters up the courage to confront Luffy directly. He expresses his fear that Luffy might abandon him and the rest of the weaker crew members, leading to a confrontation where he challenges Luffy to a fight. Unfortunately for Usopp, his captain outshines him in this encounter.

At Water 7, fans got a deeper understanding of Usopp’s convictions and authentic character, as it was here that they gained insight into his beliefs and true self. Being a fearless sea warrior is Usopp’s dream, and standing up to his captain when he disagreed with him signified a bold move towards achieving this goal.

8. Sanji – Whole Cake Island

This man had turned Sanji’s childhood into a tormenting ordeal due to his perceived lack of abilities.

The arc delves into Sanji’s defining characteristic – his selflessness – showing how far he’s prepared to go to safeguard his crewmates. Ultimately, Luffy manages to penetrate Sanji’s defenses and encourage him to listen to his own heart instead of just doing as others instruct him, but this required a great deal of perseverance.

In a valiant struggle, Zoro demonstrates remarkable resilience against Kaido, inflicting a significant wound on the formidable opponent using his latest weapon, Enma. Despite already being incredibly powerful, obtaining Enma significantly enhanced the power of Zoro, who serves as second-in-command for the Straw Hats. This story arc is particularly noteworthy because it marks the first time since Enies Lobby that Zoro has revealed his Asura form, a moment that many fans consider to be one of his most impressive post-timeskip or even overall series highlights.

10. Monkey D. Luffy – Wano

The Reality Of Luffy’s Fruit And True Potential Is Finally Revealed In Wano Kuni

Observing from a distance, I witnessed Luffy’s arrival in Wano, his objective being the formidable Yonko, Kaido. However, an abrupt and harsh lesson awaited him when he was struck down by Kaido’s Thunder Bagua attack, leaving him unconscious. Through most of this arc, Luffy found himself focusing on self-improvement to gain the strength necessary to hurt Kaido, let alone defeat him – a development that left me genuinely astounded.

In Udon Prison, Luffy eventually mastered the use of Armament Haki in the same manner as Rayleigh, empowering him to inflict damage without making physical contact with his adversary.

The reason this arc stands out for Luffy’s character is that it reveals crucial details about his Devil Fruit, particularly its links to the Sun God Nika and Joy Boy. Moreover, it was during this arc that Luffy was recognized as a Yonko, marking a significant milestone in his journey. Although the Marineford War significantly impacted Luffy emotionally, the Wano arc surpasses it due to the abundant new context and lore it introduces, making it more pivotal when considering Luffy’s storyline specifically.
