Unveiling the True Villains: Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Shocking Templar Secrets!

This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

It’s been some time since the centuries-long conflict between the Assassins and Templars was a main focus in the Assassin’s Creed series. The latest game, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, is set over a millennium before the Assassin Brotherhood and Templar Order were established, while Assassin’s Creed Origins portrays these secret organizations in their early stages as the Hidden Ones and Order of the Ancients. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla hints at the emergence of the Templars. However, for the first time in years, Assassin’s Creed Shadows rekindles the Assassin-Templar war, although it doesn’t fully regain its prominence.

In the principal plot of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, a significant portion revolves around the enigmatic group known as the Shinbakufu, which orchestrated the assassination of Naoe’s father and left her for dead at the game’s outset. However, upon eliminating every last member of the Shinbakufu in Japan, the Templars make a reappearance, and “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” doesn’t shy away from depicting the Templar Order as truly reprehensible.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Templars Are Truly Evil

Duarte de Melo – A Sadistic Slaver

In the closing stages of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, the players will ultimately gain access to Yasuke’s personal quests. These quests involve tracking down several Templars who share a significant tie with his past, a connection that remains largely obscure until a later point in the game.

The initial Templar on Yasuke’s list is Duarte de Melo, a character in ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ who is quickly revealed as a cruel and heartless individual. As Yasuke arrives at his ship, we see Duarte de Melo inflicting pain upon someone aboard. He coldly warns the victim about crying, stating that he despises it, before brutally killing the man by slitting his throat.

In their fierce encounter, Yasuke squares off against Duarte, and a fragment of the past unveils itself. Duarte de Melo is the man who once enslaved Yasuke and his mother many years ago. Their battle is intense and hostile, with Duarte constantly expressing contempt for Yasuke, largely due to his skin color. In his final breaths, Duarte spits out, “You filth don’t deserve a name.

Kimura Kei – Training a New Generation of Templars

Despite not holding the highest rank within the Japanese branch of the Templar Order, Kimura Kei has emerged as a significant figurehead among the Templars. As Yasuke observes, Kimura is engrossed in mentoring a fresh group of Templar recruits. In their confrontation, Yasuke repeatedly offers Kimura an opportunity to renounce his Templar beliefs and yield, but Kimura steadfastly declines, convinced that the Templars are the sole force capable of achieving peace in Japan and halting its persistent internal conflicts.

Nuno Caro – The Author of Yasuke’s Pain

In the storyline of Yasuke, Nuno Caro served as the captain of his ship, binding them together. If the sequence of missions played by the players in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is different, Nuno Caro might be the ultimate adversary. It’s disclosed that Duarte de Melo discovered Yasuke’s mother rummaging through documents within Nuno Caro’s cabin, leading to Caro fatally shooting her in front of Yasuke. This tragic event served as a chilling warning to all the crew and unwilling passengers on board, demonstrating Caro’s cruel intentions.

Nuno Caro attempted to kill Yasuke, but just in time, an unidentified member of the Assassin Brotherhood intervened. Amidst the confusion, Yasuke leaped into the water and was rescued by Jesuit priests Luis Frois and Alessandro Valignano. Since then, Nuno Caro has been gradually tainting Japan, spreading the Templar influence throughout the land.

The Beginning of the End

With Nuno Caro sprawled on the ground after his fight with Yasuke, he predicts that his demise will signal the commencement of a full-blown conflict between the Templars and the Secretive Sword Guild – the League of the Hidden Blade. This event will be the opening act of their war.
