In the world of Solo Leveling, the repercussions of the Jeju Island Raid are unparalleled in severity. Tragically, several elite S-Rank Hunters perished during this raid, and if it weren’t for Jin-Woo, the operation may well have failed. The loss was particularly profound for Japan, as they suffered the demise of some of their finest Hunters. What factors led to such a detrimental impact on the country following the Jeju Island Raid?
During the Jeju Island Raid, the majority of hunters from South Korea and Japan were mobilized into action. The toughest adversary yet for Solo Leveling was the Ant King, who overpowered many powerful Hunters. However, Japan’s strategic plans for the Raid backfired badly. What kind of impact will the events at Jeju Island have on them?
Japan’s Loss at Jeju Island
A Seemingly Strong Alliance

At one point, South Korea struggled to combat the terrifying ant colonies on Jeju Island. Recognizing their inability to subdue them, they reluctantly surrendered control of the island. However, as time passed, these ants developed the ability to fly, rendering any attempt at avoidance futile. Japan eventually lent a hand to South Korea by dispatching 10 of its top-tier S-Rank Hunters to join forces and combat this shared menace. Now boasting a combined total of 16 S-Rank Hunters, what was once thought impossible now appeared achievable.
Japan’s Schemes

On the Island, Japan’s hidden goals became clear. Although their main aim was to eliminate the ant threat, it also served to leverage the South Korean forces for their benefit. The Japanese strategy for the Raid was designed to minimize their own risks. They intended that the South Korean troops would handle most of the danger and gain the credit, while they stood ready to retreat if things went wrong, leaving the South Koreans to bear the brunt.
Japan Took the Greater Hit

Everything was proceeding smoothly until the Ant King showed up. This formidable adversary swiftly wiped out many Japanese Hunters in a single stroke. Despite their heavy casualties, the Japanese Hunters persisted with their plans. However, they suffered a significant blow when their leader, Goto Ryuji, fell. With over half of their forces deceased, they opted to leave the South Korean Hunters behind and regroup before launching another attack on the weakened enemy.
We weren’t able to confirm the survival of the Korean hunters…
…There’s no way they can win when they’re already exhausted.
The ants will be weak from all the fighting, as well.
If we can strike down the strong one, the others will be just fodder.
– Matsumoto Shigeo, Season 2 Episode 12
Jin-Woo Denied Japan’s Schemes Completely

In a different scenario, if Jin-Woo hadn’t made it to Jeju Island, the Ant King would likely have resulted in the death of the South Korean Hunters. With backup from both Japan and South Korea, the remaining elite Japanese Hunters might have returned to the island for another attack, claiming victory over the raid. However, Jin-Woo miraculously arrived, handling the crisis on Jeju Island single-handedly and safeguarding his fellow hunters in the process.
How Badly Will the Jeju Raid Affect Japan?

In a significant blow, Japan has seen seven elite S-Rank Hunters disappear, leaving their defenses significantly weakened. Moreover, Japan’s top guild has suffered a double loss, with its leader and strongest member both departing, making it considerably weaker. As such, should Japan encounter grave danger in the future, it may find itself heavily dependent on aid from other nations. Additionally, should Japan’s plans ever become public knowledge, it risks losing the trust and support of other countries.
