Summary
- Amazon’s Prime Video may change spending habits on pricey shows like Citadel.
- Citadel has multiple series in different languages under an international spy program concept.
- The future of the Citadel franchise is uncertain as the second season is delayed, and the spinoff series put on hold.
It appears that Amazon’s video streaming platform, known as Prime Video, hasn’t shied away from spending generously to produce content in the past. However, recent updates on one of the costliest shows produced suggest that this lavish spending trend might be altering or becoming less prevalent in the future.
Amazon’s Prime Video holds an intriguing position in the realm of streaming services. It doesn’t occupy the highest spot on Amazon’s list of priorities—much like Apple TV+ within Apple’s scope—but it has successfully established a unique space for itself when compared to heavyweights such as Netflix and Disney+.
Shows like “The Boys” and “Fallout” are among its major successes, while productions such as “The Rings of Power” and “The Wheel of Time,” although less successful in terms of viewership but expensive, also make up part of its offerings. Amazon has consistently shown a willingness to invest heavily in grand productions, with the 2023 series “Citadel” being a prime example. Despite only having six episodes, this series reportedly cost a staggering $300 million to produce.
Despite a relatively low view count, Amazon was content with the outcome of “Citadel,” approving a second season and greenlighting multiple spinoff series. However, the future has become rather unclear for the “Citadel” franchise as a whole.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got some disappointing news to share. Originally slated for Fall 2025, it appears the second season of ‘Citadel’ has been pushed back to Spring 2026, and all spinoff series have been put on hold. This decision comes following the shocking announcement that Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, is stepping down from her position.
Jennifer was a significant supporter of ‘Citadel’, having conceived the idea, brought in the Russo Brothers to produce, and given the green light for various franchise installments. Now that she’s moved on, it remains uncertain if Amazon will be willing to invest in an expensive series that doesn’t seem to have a high demand at this time.
Where Does Citadel Go From Here?
So far, there have been three distinct versions of the “Citadel” series: the initial English production, the Italian spin-off titled “Citadel: Diana”, and the Hindi adaptation named “Citadel: Honey Bunny”. Both “Citadel” and “Honey Bunny” were released on Amazon Prime Video towards the end of 2024 with minimal buzz in the United States. The fundamental premise behind “Citadel” is that the Citadel spy program is a global organization capable of producing series in various languages to cater to diverse streaming markets. In essence, it seems strategic for a large corporation like Amazon to attempt to establish a presence in multiple countries through an encompassing franchise. However, creating different episodes in multiple languages necessitates audience support, and generating captivating, high-octane spy-thrillers is not exactly a cost-effective venture. To put it mildly, this was a pricey bet from the get-go.
It’s possible that the second installment of Citadel will air on Amazon Prime Video, leaving audiences in awe and surpassing all expectations. If this happens, Amazon might decide to expand production and start launching spin-offs located worldwide. However, if the second season disappoints, it seems unlikely that any of the proposed Citadel spinoffs would thrive.
Citadel is available to stream on Prime Video.
